A man who threatened to harm himself with a knife on Rockefeller Plaza outside the "Today" show studio on Thursday was tackled by security and taken into police custody.
The incident, which occurred shortly before 8 a.m., was caught on amateur cellphone video by Twitter user @SirAnduck.
"[H]ere's what I just witnessed at NBC studio place," @SirAnduck wrote, "and my poor filming."
The man reportedly pulled out a box cutter and then was maced and tackled by an NBC security guard as some onlookers cheered.
In a photo posted to Twitter, the man could be seen pinned on the ground next to what appears to be a pool of blood as police secured the scene.
"There was an incident out on the plaza," Matt Lauer, "Today" co-host, informed viewers on the air. "A man attempted to harm himself with a knife. He did manage to cut himself. He was controlled by our security team out there, however, he did harm himself in some way, so he?s now being attended to by medical personnel."
Lauer added that the man said he did not intend to hurt anyone else but himself.
The New York Police Department and NBC are investigating the incident, NBC said.
"All secure on the plaza after a scary incident," Lauer tweeted. "Thanks to our security team and the NYPD."
