Fox News Undecided On Eric Holder Meeting - Business Insider
Fox News said Thursday morning that the network is not attending an off-the-record meeting with Attorney General Eric Holder?to discuss the Department of Justice's guidelines for handling leak investigations.
Fox anchor Bret Baier tweeted that "Executive Vice President Michael Clemente has said that Fox News will NOT attend the DOJ meeting if it is OFF the record."
Earlier, after Baier clarified that it was still undecided on the matter, he said on air that a decision would come soon.
"Well you know these organizations. So far, The Associated Press, New York Times and I think CNN has now decided not to attend if it is off the record," Baier said on air. "The purpose of this according to the Justice Department was to discuss ways forward as far as leak investigations and how to deal between the Justice Department, the FBI and the media.?And the question is whether on the record is what it needs to be.
"I think our news executives ? our executives at Fox News channel are making the determination right now. We expect a decision within the next hour or so. These meetings are scheduled to start as early as?tomorrow?and they?re expected to go, a few of them into next week.?
The meeting has been pushed back against by other news organizations because of its off-the-record nature.?
CNN, the New York Times, the Associated Press, and the Huffington Post have all said they will not attend the meeting unless it is on the record. The Washington Post and Politico have said they are attending.
ABC is attending and said it would "press for that conversation to be put on the record."
The Department of Justice came under scrutiny, in part, because of recent renewed attention to a leak investigation involving Fox News reporter James Rosen.?
In an application for a search warrant,?FBI agent Reginald Reyes wrote that there was probable cause Rosen had violated the Espionage Act by soliciting classified information from?Stephen J. Kim, a former State Department official. Reyes wrote that Rosen was an "aider and abettor and/or co-conspirator" in leaking the information.
Holder reportedly played a role in approving the search warrant.

New virus called ?threat to the entire world?
The first death in France from a new SARS-like coronavirus brings the worldwide total for the disease to 27 deaths and 49 infections, CNN reports.
The 65-year-old Frenchman was diagnosed after returning from a stay in Dubai.
According to CNN, the World Health Organization has said the disease was first seen in Saudi Arabia last year. The virus is "a threat to the entire world," Dr. Margaret Chan, WHO's general director, told the network.
The Centers for Disease Control explains that coronaviruses can affect people or animals and, in worst-case scenarios, cause SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome). And it notes there's currently no vaccine to protect against human coronavirus infection.
The disease acts like a cold and causes upper respiratory system problems. Symptoms include fever and cough and can lead to kidney failure and pneumonia.
The WHO has not learned how the new virus spreads, making it difficult to prevent infections. The organization has named it, though: Middle East respiratory symptom coronavirus, or MERS-CoV, according to CNN.

Could 'Man of Steel' star Henry Cavill be WB's 'Man From U.N.C.L.E.'?

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - WB's "Man of Steel" star Henry Cavill is now in talks to be the studio's "Man From U.N.C.L.E.," TheWrap has learned.
Cavill is making a deal to play Napoleon Solo in Guy Ritchie's feature adaptation of the classic 1960s TV series.
Cruise left the project last week in order to focus his attention on producing "Mission: Impossible 5" for Paramount and Skydance.
With "Man of Steel" buzz swirling in Burbank, WB execs are confident that Cavill has what it takes to launch a franchise that lacks the built-in audience of Superman fans. The British star of "The Tudors" previously powered Relativity's "Immortals" to a worldwide gross of $226 million.
Ritchie had been expecting to start production in the fall with Armie Hammer co-starring as Illya Kuryakin, Solo's fellow agent in the United Network Command for Law Enforcement. Robert Vaughan and David McCallum originated the roles on the 60s spy series.
Ritchie is producing with Lionel Wigram and John Davis.
It's early days, but CAA-repped Cavill doesn't have any projects crowding his fall schedule, as WB and Legendary East's supernatural movie "The Great Wall" has been postponed indefinitely.

France's first gay marriage is broadcast to nation
MONTPELLIER, France (AP) ? In a historic ceremony broadcast live on French television, the first gay couple to marry in France said "oui," then sealed the deal with a lengthy and very public kiss.
Hundreds of invited guests including a government minister gathered for the moving ceremony Wednesday inside city hall in southern French city of Montpellier. Hundreds more flocked to the square outside the building as Vincent Autin, 40, and his 30-year-old partner, Bruno Boileau, were wed.
The politically charged ceremony was held under tight police surveillance ? a stark reminder of the months of bruising opposition to the new gay marriage law that French lawmakers passed earlier this month.
Although the marriage itself went undisrupted, outside the city hall it was not trouble-free. A plainclothes policeman dragged back one protester on Wednesday who shouted threats and tried to approach the couple as they were being escorted into the building, before the ceremony. Police also used tear gas to push back a small group of demonstrators who gathered behind the city hall.
"Even if we have passed the hurdle of equality, there are still more battles to fight... But for now, it's a moment for festivity, for love," Autin said after exchanging vows. Some cried, others smiled as Frank Sinatra's hit "Love and Marriage" blasted out, marking them tying the knot.
The two men then walked hand-in-hand to the city hall balcony to wave to well-wishers alongside Montpellier Mayor Helene Mandroux, who officiated at the ceremony. Smiling proudly, Mandroux called the marriage a "historic moment" and "a stage in the modernization of our country."
The two men, who will adopt the names "Messieurs Bruno et Vincent Boileau-Autin," were holding a separate, private ceremony later Wednesday for close friends and family.
"Many people have been waiting for this law on marriage and adoption. Now, it's done. Many people are going to be doing as we did, and celebrating their unions... We are very pleased and honored," said Boileau.
It is not clear yet when the first gay adoption will take place.
News of the marriage will not be welcomed in every corner of France. Just last Sunday, tens of thousands of people protested fiercely in Paris against the new gay marriage law, demonstrations that ended with riot police shooting tear gas.
A plan to legalize same-sex marriage and allow gay couples to adopt was a liberal cornerstone of Socialist Francois Hollande's election manifesto last year. It initially looked like a shoo-in for the French president ? since the measures were supported by a majority of the country ? and an easy way to break with his conservative predecessor, Nicolas Sarkozy.
But the issue became a touchstone as Hollande's popularity sunk to unprecedented lows, largely over France's ailing economy. The law became a political hot potato that exposed bitter divisions between urban France, where homosexuality is widely accepted, and the Catholic heartland where conservative attitudes hold sway.
"What happened in our country to create so many divisions?" Mandroux said Wednesday, reflecting on the wrenching debate.
Demonstrations against the gay marriage law have often spilled into violence.
In Sunday's protest in the French capital, several hundred protesters clashed with police, throwing bottles and chasing journalists. Interior Minister Manuel Valls said police arrested some 100 far-right protesters.
Paris police estimated that 150,000 people took part in the demonstration but march organizers claimed on their Twitter account that more than a million people did.
At the same time Sunday, on the shores of the Mediterranean, the prestigious 66th Cannes Film Festival gave the Palme d'Or, its top honor, to "Blue is the Warmest Color: The Life of Adele," a graphic French film about a tender, sensual lesbian romance.
France is the 14th country so far ? and the biggest in political and economic weight ? to recognize gay marriage.

Iran leader not backing presidential candidate
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's top leader says he is not backing a particular candidate among the eight running for president.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told lawmakers Wednesday, "Nobody knows for whom the top leader votes."
It's the third time in recent weeks that Khamenei has insisted that he is neutral. He is apparently responding the reports that he favors one of the candidates.
He called the rumors "unreal" in remarks broadcast on Iran's state TV.
All eight candidates are seen insiders and loyalists to Khamenei, who has final say on all state matters. Other candidates, including reformers and centrists, were disqualified. The election is set for June 14.
Ahead of every presidential campaign in past years, political activists have tried to spread rumors about Khamenei's favorite to drum up support for their candidates.

Researchers from the Pasteur Institute, Lille, France have shown in a mouse model that interleukin-22 protects against bacterial superinfections that can arise following influenza. Their research is published in the June 2013 issue of the Journal of Virology.
Influenza A viral infection can lead to primary pneumonia and, later on, to serious complications including secondary bacterial pneumonia and sepsis. Post-influenza bacterial superinfections that occur during seasonal epidemics and pandemics are of great concern to human health and impose a considerable socio-economic burden.
"It is therefore critical that we reach a better understanding of the causes of and potential treatments for post-influenza bacterial superinfection," says corresponding author Franois Trottein.
"Mouse studies have revealed that impairment of the host innate immune defense, as well as lung damage caused by the virus are cardinal features of bacterial superinfection," says Trottein. The authors tested the hypothesis that interleukin-22, an important cytokine implicated in mucosal immunity, inflammation and tissue repair, might play an important role during influenza.
The authors show that several cell types belonging to the innate immune system produce interleukin-22 soon after infection. They also demonstrate that the lack of interleukin-22 aggravates the pathogenesis that develops in the lungs and in particular exacerbates epithelial damage caused by the virus. Furthermore, endogenous interleukin-22 displays a protective role during secondary bacterial (pneumococcus) infection in the mouse system.
Although the mechanisms sustaining the protective effect of interleukin-22 are not yet fully elucidated, the authors speculate that its beneficial effect is due to its role in the maintenance of epithelial integrity.
"If it works as well in humans, the production of interleukin-22 could confer a substantial benefit on patients having flu," says Trottein.

Bomb hits Afghan lawmaker's convoy, 5 dead
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? An Afghan lawmaker says a roadside bomb under a bridge has hit his convoy on a major highway north of Kabul, killing five people.
Obaidullah Ramin, a lawmaker from northern Baghlan province, says he does not believe he was intentionally targeted by the explosion early Tuesday. Police confirmed his account.
He said the main highway leading north out of Kabul is often mined by Taliban insurgents to target official-looking convoys.
Three of Ramin's relatives were among the dead.
Roadside bombs are a favorite Taliban weapon to target government officials as well as the both Afghan and international military forces.
The insurgents have stepped up attacks in recent weeks, seeking to weaken the government and security forces as foreign troops pull back in preparation for the international coalition leaving next year.

Nietes-Fuentes II set in Mexico
MANILA, Philippines ? Boxing champion Donnie Nietes is set to battle his Mexican nemesis, Moises Fuentes, in a rematch that is scheduled to take place in Mexico.
According to Philippine Star columnist Joaquin Henson, Nietes manager, ALA president Michael Aldeguer, has already come to terms with Fuentes? handler, Zanfer Promotions.?
The rematch will take place in Mexico, eight months after the boxers fought to a controversial majority draw at the Waterfront Hotel Pacific Ballroom in Lahug, Cebu.
At stake in the fight is Nietes? WBO junior flyweight title.
Nietes? camp earlier turned down the rematch offer when Fuentes demanded that no Filipino judge be assigned to score their second fight.
In their first bout, Filipino judge Danrex Tapdasan scored it 115-113 for Nietes, while San Diego?s Pat Russell and Las Vegas? Adalaide Byrd saw it 114-all.
Aldeguer cited that Nietes never complained when he was assigned a Mexican judge in two of his three title defenses as WBO minimumweight champion in Mexico.
However, it is not yet clear if the WBO will assign a Filipino or a Mexican for the rematch.
Meanwhile, Aldeguer said Nietes will make a title defense first before battling Fuentes again.
?His next fight will be on Aug. 24 in Cebu. It will be a voluntary defense before the rematch with Fuentes,? he said.

BRUSSELS (AP) ? British Foreign Secretary William Hague says the European Union has decided to lift the arms embargo on the Syrian opposition while maintaining all other sanctions against Bashar Assad's regime after June 1.
Hague said after the meeting Monday that the decision "sends a very strong message from Europe to the Assad regime."
The all-day meeting laid bare EU hesitation on feeding arms in a foreign conflict only months after it won the Nobel Peace Prize.
Hague insisted that Britain had "no immediate plans to send arms to Syria. It gives us flexibility to respond in the future if the situation continues to deteriorate."

'Fast' races past 'Hangover' at weekend box office
LOS ANGELES (AP) ? It's a blowout at the box office.
"Fast & Furious 6" is revving past "The Hangover Part III" in the No. 1 position at the Memorial Day weekend box office.
Universal Pictures' sixth installment of its muscle car franchise featuring Vin Diesel and Paul Walker debuted with $98.5 million domestically from Friday to Sunday, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Meanwhile, the final edition of the raunchy Warner Bros. comedy trilogy starring Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms opened with $42.1 million in the No. 2 spot.
Universal estimates that by the end of the four-day holiday weekend Monday, "Fast & Furious 6" will have pulled in $122.2 million domestically and $275.5 million worldwide. That would give it the second-biggest opening of the year behind "Iron Man 3."
Paramount Pictures' sci-fi sequel "Star Trek: Into Darkness" earned $38 million at No. 3 in its second weekend at the box office, while the Fox animated film "Epic" opened at No. 4 with $34.2 million.
Overall domestic receipts for the four-day Memorial Day weekend are expected to come in ahead of 2011's record-breaking $276 million.
Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com, estimated that four-day revenues this time will total $323 million, about 15 percent above Memorial Day weekend in 2011, when "The Hangover Part II" delivered a $103.4 million debut.

Sen. Rand Paul: Scandals hurt Obama's 'moral authority'
Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said on "This Week" that the recent controversies engulfing the White House over the IRS, reporter leak investigations, and Benghazi have threatened President Obama's "moral authority to lead the nation," while he continued to question the administration's use of drone strikes against terrorist targets overseas.
"I think the constellation of these three scandals ongoing, really takes away from the president's moral authority to lead the nation," Paul said this morning on "This Week." "Nobody questions his legal authority, but I think he's really losing the moral authority to lead this nation. And he really needs to put a stop to this. I don't care whether you're a Republican or a Democrat, nobody likes to see the opposite party punishing you for your political beliefs, using the power of government to do so."
While he has called for a special counsel to investigate the IRS scandal, in which the IRS gave increased scrutiny to conservative groups applying for non-profit status, Paul would not say whether he believed any crimes were committed.
"I don't think we know so far. The main woman from the IRS that's involved has taken the Fifth Amendment. She's no longer cooperating," Paul said of Lois Lerner, the IRS official who refused to testify at a House committee hearing on Wednesday, and was put on leave from her position Thursday. "I think there needs to be a speedy resolution to this? If he goes beyond 30 days and if no one is fired over this? I really think it's going to be trouble for him trying to lead in the next four years."And while Paul said he was "pleased with" the words of President Obama's major national security speech last week, he continued to question the administration's use of drone strikes and whether proper due process is occurring before military action against terrorist targets.
"I was pleased with his words, and I was pleased with the - that he did respond to this," Paul said in reaction to President Obama's speech Thursday at the National Defense University. "However, there still is a question in my mind of what he thinks due process is. You know, due process to most of us is a court of law, it's a trial by a jury. And right now their process is him looking at some flashcards and a PowerPoint presentation on 'Terror Tuesdays' in the White House. For a lot of us, that's not really due process."
When asked whether a drone strike should have been used against Al Qaeda leader and American citizen Anwar al-Awlaki, who was killed by a drone strike in Yemen in 2011, Paul reiterated his belief that the U.S. should attempt to try individuals for treason, with a judge reviewing evidence before military strikes.
"If you are conspiring to attack America and you are a traitor, I would try you for treason," Paul said. "If you don't come home for the trial, I would try you in absentia. And then the death penalty has been used repeatedly throughout our history for treason, but a judge looks at evidence. And that's something that separates us from the rest of the world, is that we adjudicate things by taking it to an independent body who's not politically motivated, or elected."
Paul, who led a 13-hour Senate filibuster on the administration's use of drone strikes in March, also questioned whether President Obama was truly protecting civil liberties by promising not to carry out certain actions such as detaining citizens indefinitely - while still retaining the power to do so under the law.
"It's not good enough to us that he's not using a power," Paul said. "We want him to assert that he won't, that he doesn't have the power."
Paul said he did not back closing the detainee prison at Guantanamo Bay, which President Obama called for again last week, but Paul said the prison has "become a symbol of something though, and I think things should change."
"I think the people being held there are bad people," Paul said. "What I would do though is I would accuse them, charge them, and try them in military commissions, or trials, or tribunals. And I think that would go a long way toward showing the world that we're not going to hold them without charge forever."

After seven months of cooperative tapping, Peter Molyneux's Curiosity experiment is finally over: the cube is open. As Molyneux's studio, 22Cans, teased the game's last layer over Twitter, players descended upon it, chipping away the last million cubelets in a matter of minutes. "We have a winner," the game's creator wrote on the social network. "They should get a message now." 22Cans is currently trying to validate the player who tapped away the final block. After the final block disappeared, so did the cube, presumably to be opened privately by the winner. So, what was inside the box? We may never know -- but if you just happened to win, fill us in, would you?
Update: The winner asked Molyneux to share the winner video with the community. Their prize? Godhood, according to 22Cans. The winner will be featured as a deity in the company's next game, Goddess, and will able to "decide on the rules that the game is played by." Animations, comic books, and Friday movie days at school? Any Seaking can experience all of that in one art class: Digital Animation. With an ?easy, relaxing environment,? Mrs. Jimenez teaches students how ?to tell stories through pictures, to draw a story and to learn to put both drawing skills together with writing skills.? And the best part is that you don?t even need to be talented at drawing; all you need is the drive to learn about it.
Animation is completely based on organization and design, but it can be taken in many directions. Because it centralizes around organization and design, little talent regarding art is needed. In Digital Animation, students learn the basics of animation, and with each year, they learn how to continue refining their skills. Students can create anything that suits their interests, whether that is a comic, a film or a clip.
This is really a class for everyone. Jared Schwartz, a senior who has been interested in digital animation since a young age, actually draws his own animations, which are ?incredibly difficult?to make convincing.? Although difficult, his hand-drawn products are definitely the most satisfying. Schwartz enjoys, ?[being] creative and [throwing] ideas around? which he is allowed to do in digital animation. However, even if you aren?t an artist like, Schwartz, don?t be alarmed.
Senior Peter Kim has been interested in digital animation since the age of seven, but he wasn?t serious about it until he took Digital Animation as a freshman. He ?wanted to go to the next level with [digital animation] to manipulate characters better.? This class inspired an interest in Kim, which slowly began to evolve into a career path. ?I like manipulating it any way I want?you don?t have to be good at art, you just need to think of something in your head and make it,? Kim explains, ?Digital Animation is a way for someone who isn?t necessarily the most talented artist to express himself[/herself] through art.?
Because there is no need to be a prodigy artist for this class, it appeals to many students. ?I?m not very good at art and I think Digital Animation sounds like a very interesting class,? sophomore Stephanie Hauschildt exclaims, ?I think it would be fun, especially because I think I want to be an engineer.? This art class especially intrigues aspiring engineers, designers, and architects because the 3-D modeling and animation applies to these career paths.
Even people who aren?t interested in making a career out of it can still have fun. Sophomore Monica Merha exclaims, ?I love animated movies and because I haven?t fulfilled my art credit yet, I am definitely interested in the class.? With this class you can learn how animations are created.
Mrs. Jimenez?s Digital Animation class has a great, easy-going environment where you are ?able to be goofy.? She?s been teaching the class for about twelve years, and with her knowledge and expertise, anyone can develop the skills capable to begin a career in digital animation. This art class, along with animated movie Fridays, gives one an experience with art that not many people get.

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) ? More than 4,000 Russian singers have performed outdoors in St. Petersburg with the aim of setting a world record for the largest choir.
The 4,335 singers of all ages and from nearly all of the city's professional and amateur choirs sang from the steps of St. Isaac's Cathedral before thousands of spectators under an intermittent rain.
The spectators, who closed their umbrellas with the start of Sunday's performance, sang along during the one-hour concert.
The 14 songs performed included some of the most popular and patriotic songs of Russia and the Soviet Union, including a hymn celebrating the country's victory in World War II.
Yulia Alshenina, whose daughter sang in the choir, said the concert was so moving she could not hold back her tears.

Sky's Apps Have Been Hacked And Are Off Google Play
The British Sky Broadcasting Group has removed their Android apps (Sky News, Sky Go, Sky+ and Sky Wi-Fi) from Google Play because of concerns that the Syrian Electronic Army has hacked the apps. Sky is advising users to delete the apps while they respond to the problem.

UK Beach Quality Plummets
As Memorial Day weekend sees people in the United States celebrating the opening of beach season, data from a European Environment Agency (EEA) report serves as a warning of how wild weather can affect water safety.
The United Kingdom's beach water quality plummeted in 2012, likely because a record-setting deluge of rain last spring triggered sewage overflows.
Data released by the European Environment Agency on Tuesday (May 21) showed the number of "excellent" beaches in England, Scotland and Ireland ? those beaches that meet certain standards for intestinal bacteria and E. coli ? plummeted by a quarter in just one year.
In 2012, excellent beaches stood at just 58.2 percent, down from 82.8 percent in 2011. Further, the United Kingdom's compliance rate with bathing water health standards was among the lowest in the European Union. [Stunning Sands Gallery: A Rainbow of Beaches]
Overwhelming sewage infrastructure
Many of the 629 "bathing waters" identified across the United Kingdom suffered as rainfall deluged the islands between May and June.
According to the U.K.'s environment agency, rainfall ranged between 11 and 17 inches (28 to 43 centimeters) in those three months. Adding to the problem, some of the infrastructure near U.K. beaches needs to be upgraded due to disrepair and capacity issues.
"It was particularly [bad] because of these overflows of sewers," said Peter Kristensen, EEA's project manager of integrated water assessments, in an interview with LiveScience.
"These heavy rainfalls overflow the combined sewers of connected houses and, in some cases, also [overwhelm] drains from farms where water can wash out into streams," he said.
There are projects underway to address this flooding problem, however. For example, Bloomberg News recently reported that London plans to add a "super sewer" to its network, which was first built in 1858 after a "Great Stink" overwhelmed the city. Construction will start in July and is expected to finish by 2017.
Standards rise across Europe
For the European bathing quality report, scientists examined more than 22,000 waters suitable for bathing across 18 European Union member states as well as Croatia. The report has been generated annually for about two decades, but keeps expanding as new members are added to the union, Kristensen said.
While the United Kingdom's water quality suffered, beaches across Europe saw an overall rise in quality. The EU average for beaches meeting standards was 78.3 percent, but 10 countries ? more than last year ? exceeded the standard. Cyprus and Luxembourg tied for top spot at 100 percent of beaches in compliance.
Kristensen said it is difficult to generalize why there is an overall rise in quality across Europe, though he noted several countries have emphasized beach cleanups to attract tourists.
Measures to improve quality can range from simple ones, such as public education campaigns telling people not to walk their dogs along the beach, to upgrading infrastructure to accommodate an expanding population and the wetter weather that is coming due to climate change and other factors.

LONDON (AP) ? British police investigating the savage killing of an off-duty soldier in London have arrested three more suspects.
Scotland Yard said counter-terrorism officers arrested two men, aged 24 and 28, at a residential address in southeast London.
A third man, 21, was arrested separately on a London street at the same time.
Police said Saturday they used a stun gun on two of the suspects. All three were detained on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder.
Officers have already detained four others in connection with the murder of 25-year-old soldier Lee Rigby, who was stabbed to death while walking outside the Royal Artillery Barracks in the Woolwich, south London, on Wednesday afternoon.

Electronic commerce, commonly known as ecommerce, is a type of industry where buying and selling of product or service is conducted over electronic systems such as the Internet and other computer networks. Electronic commerce draws on technologies such as mobile commerce, electronic funds transfer, supply chain management, Internet marketing, online transaction processing, electronic data interchange (EDI), inventory management systems, and automated data collection systems. Modern electronic commerce typically uses the World Wide Web at least at one point in the transaction's life-cycle, although it may encompass a wider range of technologies such as e-mail, mobile devices social media, and telephones as well.
Electronic commerce is generally considered to be the sales aspect of e-business. It also consists of the exchange of data to facilitate the financing and payment aspects of business transactions.
E-commerce can be divided into:
->E-tailing or "virtual storefronts" on websites with online catalogs, sometimes gathered into a "virtual mall"
->The gathering and use of demographic data through Web contacts and social media
->Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), the business-to-business exchange of data

Governmental regulation
In the United States, some electronic commerce activities are regulated by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). These activities include the use of commercial e-mails, online advertising and consumer privacy. The CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 establishes national standards for direct marketing over e-mail. The Federal Trade Commission Act regulates all forms of advertising, including online advertising, and states that advertising must be truthful and non-deceptive. Using its authority under Section 5 of the FTC Act, which prohibits unfair or deceptive practices, the FTC has brought a number of cases to enforce the promises in corporate privacy statements, including promises about the security of consumers' personal information. As result, any corporate privacy policy related to e-commerce activity may be subject to enforcement by the FTC.
The Ryan Haight Online Pharmacy Consumer Protection Act of 2008, which came into law in 2008, amends the Controlled Substances Act to address online pharmacies.
Internationally there is the International Consumer Protection and Enforcement Network (ICPEN), which was formed in 1991 from an informal network of government customer fair trade organisations. The purpose was stated as being to find ways of co-operating on tackling consumer problems connected with cross-border transactions in both goods and services, and to help ensure exchanges of information among the participants for mutual benefit and understanding. From this came econsumer, as an initiative of ICPEN since April 2001. http://www.econsumer.gov is a portal to report complaints about online and related transactions with foreign companies.
There is also Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) was established in 1989 with the vision of achieving stability, security and prosperity for the region through free and open trade and investment. APEC has an Electronic Commerce Stearing Group as well as working on common privacy regulations throughout the APEC region.
In Australia, Trade is covered under Australian Treasury Guidelines for electronic commerce, and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission regulates and offers advice on how to deal with businesses online, and offers specific advice on what happens if things go wrong.

In the United Kingdom, The FSA (Financial Services Authority) is the competent authority for most aspects of the Payment Services Directive (PSD). The UK implemented the PSD through the Payment Services Regulations 2009 (PSRs), which came into effect on 1 November 2009. The PSR affects firms providing payment services and their customers. These firms include banks, non-bank credit card issuers and non-bank merchant acquirers, e-money issuers, etc. The PSRs created a new class of regulated firms known as payment institutions (PIs), who are subject to prudential requirements. Article 87 of the PSD requires the European Commission to report on the implementation and impact of the PSD by 1 November 2012.
Forms
Contemporary electronic commerce involves everything from ordering "digital" content for immediate online consumption, to ordering conventional goods and services, to "meta" services to facilitate other types of electronic commerce.
On the institutional level, big corporations and financial institutions use the internet to exchange financial data to facilitate domestic and international business. Data integrity and security are very hot and pressing issues for electronic commerce.
Aside from traditional e-Commerce, m-Commerce as well as the nascent t-Commerce channels are often seen as the current 2013 poster children of electronic I-Commerce.
Global trends
In 2010, the United Kingdom had the biggest e-commerce market in the world when measured by the amount spent per capita, even higher than the USA.
Amongst emerging economies, China's e-commerce presence continues to expand. With 384 million internet users, China's online shopping sales rose to $36.6 billion in 2009 and one of the reasons behind the huge growth has been the improved trust level for shoppers. The Chinese retailers have been able to help consumers feel more comfortable shopping online. eCommerce is also expanding across the Middle East. Having recorded the world's fastest growth in internet usage between 2000 and 2009, the region is now home to more than 60 million internet users. Retail, travel and gaming are the region's top eCommerce segments, in spite of difficulties such as the lack of region-wide legal frameworks and logistical problems in cross-border transportation. E-Commerce has become an important tool for businesses worldwide not only to sell to customers but also to engage them.
Impact on markets and retailers
Economists have theorized that e-commerce ought to lead to intensified price competition, as it increases consumers' ability to gather information about products and prices. Research by four economists at the University of Chicago has found that the growth of online shopping has also affected industry structure in two areas that have seen significant growth in e-commerce, bookshops and travel agencies. Generally, larger firms have grown at the expense of smaller ones, as they are able to use economies of scale and offer lower prices. The lone exception to this pattern has been the very smallest category of bookseller, shops with between one and four employees, which appear to have withstood the trend.

2000: The dot-com bust.
2001: Alibaba.com achieved profitability in December 2001.
2002: eBay acquires PayPal for $1.5 billion. Niche retail companies Wayfair and NetShops are founded with the concept of selling products through several targeted domains, rather than a central portal.
2003: Amazon.com posts first yearly profit.
2004: DHgate.com, China's first online b2b transaction platform, is established, forcing other b2b sites to move away from the "yellow pages" model.
2007: Business.com acquired by R.H. Donnelley for $345 million.
2009: Zappos.com acquired by Amazon.com for $928 million. Retail Convergence, operator of private sale website RueLaLa.com, acquired by GSI Commerce for $180 million, plus up to $170 million in earn-out payments based on performance through 2012.
2010: Groupon reportedly rejects a $6 billion offer from Google. Instead, the group buying websites went ahead with an IPO on November 4, 2011. It was the largest IPO since Google.
2011: Quidsi.com, parent company of Diapers.com, acquired by Amazon.com for $500 million in cash plus $45 million in debt and other obligations. GSI Commerce, a company specializing in creating, developing and running online shopping sites for brick and mortar businesses, acquired by eBay for $2.4 billion.
2012: US eCommerce and Online Retail sales projected to reach $226 billion, an increase of 12 percent over 2011.
2012: Us eCommerce and Online Retail holiday sales reach $33.8 billion, up 13 percent.
