Connecticut Mayor On Gun Control: It Isn't Too Early To Start Talking (VIDEO)

Bridgeport, Connecticut Mayor Bill Finch told HuffPost Live hosts Jacob Soboroff and Alyona Minkovski that it isn't too early to begin discussing new gun control laws.

Finch's comments come in the wake of a mass shooting Friday morning at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Police reported 27 deaths, including 20 children, six adults and the shooter, according to the Associated Press.

"It isn't too early to early to start talking about gun control because those children deserve out prayers and our comfort but it isn't too early to fight harder than we ever have," Finch told HuffPost Live.

"I'm a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment -- I'm an outdoorsman, I believe in people's right to bear arms -- but there are too many guns in this country." Finch said. "They are too easy to get, and they have become a currency that are related to the drug traffic, and we have got to do something about it."

In response to the shooting, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Friday morning that today is not the day for a debate on gun control.

"There is, I am sure -- will be, rather -- a day for discussion of the usual Washington policy debates, but I do not think today is that day," Carney told reporters, adding that President Barack Obama remains committed to renewing an expired ban on assault weapons.
