The real cost of that 'free app' - Tech Greedy - News

The real cost of that 'free app' just might be your privacy

(ARA) ? The app world is booming and today there are more than 1 million mobile apps available for download through online stores run by companies like Apple and Google. Many apps are available free of charge and collect user data for advertising purposes, raising the question: What is the true cost of these ?free? apps?

?While there may be no monetary charge to download an app, it might mean you agree to let the app maker collect and use your personal information, like your email address, for marketing purposes,? says Chris Babel, CEO for TRUSTe, an online privacy solutions company. ?Ideally, this data collection would be revealed in the app?s privacy policy, but many apps don?t have these policies. Even those that do have one often burry key disclosures and make them very difficult to find.?

Smartphones today collect and store a wealth of personal information because they?re always ?on,? and typically go wherever their users go. Consumers store extensive contact information, calendar data, and personal videos and photos on these devices. Modern smartphones may also contain GPS technology capable of collecting precise data about the phone?s movement and location in near real-time. ?

?Personal data collection online has been happening for years on traditional PCs,? says Babel. ?The difference today is that these ?computers? now sit in our pockets in the form of smartphones, and are capable of collecting more types of data, in greater quantities, than ever before. It?s a far more complex ecosystem and it can be difficult for consumers to understand what?s happening with their data. ?

Unwelcome data collection on smartphones can lead to unwanted and intrusive advertising, and increase the risk of data breaches as companies build ever-larger databases of personal information profiling consumers. Before you click that next free download, TRUSTe recommends taking these steps to protect your privacy:

Look for a privacy policy

In early 2012, the California Attorney General struck an agreement with all major app store operators stipulating that apps in their stores must contain privacy policies to comply with California law. A TRUSTe analysis of the top 50 Android and iOS mobile apps at the time, however, found only one in three had a privacy policy. Moreover, these apps that had policies typically did not optimize them for reading on smartphone?s smaller screens and lacked clarity over whether certain disclosures applied to the app or to the parent company?s website.

A study conducted a few months later by the Future of Privacy Forum found improvement in the app marketplace, with 61 percent of top apps in the study featuring privacy policies. If you can?t find a privacy policy for an app, or find one but can?t understand it, think twice about downloading that app. Look for apps that offer easy-to-find, easy-to-understand privacy policies. Mobile apps certified by TRUSTe (bearing TRUSTe?s green privacy seal of approval) will always have privacy policies in clear, easy to understand terms for smartphone users. ?

Set app and smartphone privacy settings

Many apps contain privacy settings that can control behaviors like what information the app collects, how it interacts with other apps or a user?s contacts, and how it communicates with and alerts the app user about its background activity. In some cases, these settings may have their own section under a ?privacy? tab within the app, but more often than not these privacy settings are found alongside standard settings within the app, like volume levels or sound effects.?

?We commissioned a Harris Interactive survey and found that nearly three quarters of the population worries about their privacy when using mobile apps,? says Babel. ?App developers not only have a responsibility to provide consumers with mobile-appropriate privacy disclosures, but also meaningful choices about how their data is collected and used.?

The settings tab of your smartphone operating system (like iOS for Apple devices) may also contain important privacy choices, allowing you to control the types of personal information that apps may collect from the device. Depending on your device, these settings may also provide you with granular privacy control over apps, preventing one app, for example, from collecting GPS data while allowing other apps to collect this data.

Mauritanian president lightly wounded by soldiers

(AP) ? Mauritania's Minister of Communication says President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz has been lightly wounded by friendly fire after his vehicle was fired upon by the military on the outskirts of the capital, Nouakchott.

Hamdi Ould Mahjoub said that Aziz was shot in the arm when the military unit opened fire on his convoy. The president was returning from a trip to the desert and the incident occurred 40 kilometers (24 miles) north of the capital.

Mahjoun said the president's life was not in danger. He is being treated at the military hospital in Nouakchott.

It's unclear why the military opened fire on the presidential motorcade Saturday, but reports in local media indicated the military unit had not been told of the president's trip.

Mauritania has been destabilized by an al-Qaida affiliate, which has launched attacks in Mauritania from neighboring Mali.

You'll have a opportunity to discover how much you be eligible for prior to agreeing to any kind of bank loan agreement.

There's an essential legal big difference from a present as well as a bank loan. A very nice family member or even good friend may offer you $5000 regarding auto repairs, as an example. When there's no hope of payment, the cash could be a gift. The actual giver couldn't sue regarding repayment later inside a city fit. However, if the credit supplier designates the money just like a bank loan and also the customer pays back a dollar, the amount of money may very well be a legitimate bank loan as well as the loan provider could need payment anytime. Small claims legal courts invest a lot of time identifying regardless of whether the deal which includes cash would have been a gift or loan. Because of this documents is important when creating private financial loans in order to pals as well as family.

The requirements to get a loan are quite obvious. If you are employed, having a month-to-month profits of $800 or maybe more, and also a banking account, you satisfy the fundamental qualifications. Some creditors inside our network could have additional requirements.

Money lending products tend to be unsecured financial loans eliminated on the following wage. Because they're short-term financial loans, they may be little; various from $100 to $1500 and also payment comes to your next payday. Germany urges end of visa-free EU travel for Serbs, Macedonians

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany's interior minister called on Friday for the suspension of visa-free travel for Serbs and Macedonians to the European Union following a surge in asylum applications from citizens of the two Balkan countries.

Serbs and Macedonians accounted for nearly a third of all applications for political asylum in Germany last month, official data showed, though both former Yugoslav republics are candidates to join the European Union and are thus required to uphold its values and freedoms.

Illegal immigration and asylum are likely to prove sensitive issues for German politicians in the countdown to federal elections next autumn.

"The increasing abuse of the asylum system is not acceptable ... The huge inflow of Serbian and Macedonian citizens must be stopped immediately," Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich said in a statement.

The top-selling Bild daily quoted Friedrich as saying: "Visa-free travel must not lead to abuse of the asylum rules. This will strain the readiness of Germans to help the truly needy and persecuted."

The number of Serb asylum applicants in Germany rose threefold in September from the previous month while Macedonian requests jumped 70 percent, the data showed.

Visitors from Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro won the right to visa-free travel in the European Union's border-free Schengen zone in 2009. Citizens of Bosnia and Albania followed suit in 2010.

Late last year the European Union agreed new rules to make it easier to restore visa requirements, to counter fears of a sudden influx of migrants from the western Balkans.

But the bloc's Council of Ministers and the European Parliament have still to approve those rules, which envisage a temporary suspension of visa-free arrangements for countries whose citizens are deemed to be abusing the system.

"It may take up to six more months to get a final agreement," an EU official in Brussels told Reuters.

This week, a lawmaker from Germany's main opposition Social Democrats, Michael Hartmann, urged the authorities to reject bogus asylum applications more swiftly and to focus resources on genuine cases from countries such as Syria and Afghanistan.

Germany receives about 144,000 requests for political asylum per year, down from a peak of 500,000 in 1996, Hartmann said. Germany took in large numbers of refugees from the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s.

BMW Intelligent Driving: cars and motorcycles talking to each other ...

Home ? Cars News, General ? BMW Intelligent Driving: cars and motorcycles talking to each other via Car-to-X communication

Show Your Love By Sharing

BMW Group is finding new ways to make their range of vehicles more efficient, safe and intelligent. BMW Group has now announced that they started extensive testing of their vehicles which will feature Car-to-X technologies. These will offer all the assistance possible to drivers. Car-to-X (C2X) is to showcase how the concept of networked cars can be adapted to increase road safety and enhance efficiency of its engine. The trials will be undertaken with 120 vehicles (25 BMW vechicles) that will be tested at the Rhine-Main region while field operation tests are being carried out at Hessen.

Intelligent driving predicts what is up ahead and intimates driver well in advance and in this way offers better safety and saving of energy. However these sensors have a limited anticipation horizon and are mainly confined to vehicles in the immediate vicinity. With C2X communications this limit is extended and hence allows drivers to look far ahead and even see things that are hidden from view or round corners.

All 120 cars on test will be linked to the network and will keep each other updated on exact traffic conditions, jams, approaching vehicles, etc all in good time thereby enabling the driver to take necessary and timely action.?BMW ConnectedRide offers protection for motorcyclists. ConnectedRide is the same as ConnectedDrive but for two wheelers to ensure rider's safety in various road conditions. Slippery roads, heavy rainfall, fog, etc pose a problem for motorbike riders. Through ConnectedRide, riders are given advance notification so that immediate and correct action can be taken.

Auto News Release

The BMW Group gets cars and motorcycles talking to each other in the simTD research project. One of the world's most extensive field operational tests of Car-to-X communication has got under way in Hessen.

Frankfurt am Main. Intelligent driving that saves energy and increases safety always means anticipating what's ahead, too. An array of sensors is today already at work in vehicles to help drivers do just that. The anticipation "horizon" of these sensors is often limited, however, and confined to the vehicle's immediate surroundings. "Car-to-X communication greatly extends the anticipation horizon and will in future allow drivers to look far into the distance, see things that are hidden, and even peer round several corners," explains Karl-Ernst Steinberg, Manager Projects IT Drive at BMW Group Research and Technology.

Car-to-X communication means networking vehicles and infrastructure with one another electronically, enabling a direct exchange of information between both the vehicles themselves and between vehicles and the traffic infrastructure, such as traffic light systems. This makes Car-to-X a comprehensive messaging network that every road user can be involved in. As the potential of Car-to-X communication can only be fully exploited through mass use, it makes sense to research this technology in alliance with other partners. That's why numerous companies from the automotive and telecommunications industries, the federal state government of Hessen, the city of Frankfurt am Main and a number of prominent universities and research institutes have joined forces to work on the research project simTD (a German abbreviation standing for Safe Intelligent Mobility ? Testing Ground Germany). Their common objective is to test out the functionality, everyday practicality and effectiveness of Car-to-X communication under realistic conditions for the first time.

Car-to-X communication. The networking technology of the future.

Car-to-X communication essentially takes place via wireless LAN and mobile network connections. It is based on high-speed WLAN, which is derived from the high-frequency WLAN standard IEEE 802.11p or ITS G5A and allows real-time communication. The protocol is structured in such a way that many different subscribers can communicate with one another in parallel with zero interference. At the same time, mobile communications networks are becoming more and more powerful too, with higher bandwidths and ever shorter delays in data transmission, or latency as it is known. As a result, they are playing an increasingly important role for Car-to-X communication, for instance as a way of supplementing the WLAN communication.

20 BMW cars and five BMW motorcycles are taking part.
Following four years of research work, the field operational test has now started, one of the biggest of its kind in the world. Using a fleet of 120 test vehicles, the technology will now be put to the test for the first time in real traffic conditions on autobahns and major highways as well as urban routes in and around Frankfurt am Main. The BMW Group is the only project partner to have both cars and motorcycles taking part in the field trial.

BMW ConnectedRide. Active protection for motorcyclists too.

The BMW Group always gives consideration to all road user groups in its efforts to keep raising road safety standards. Besides applications for BMW Group cars and for protecting pedestrians and cyclists, integrating motorcycles into the system of reciprocal networking, too, is an especially important aspect of Car-to-X communication. BMW Motorrad ConnectedRide is the two-wheeled equivalent of BMW ConnectedDrive and focuses on enhancing safety for motorcyclists. One of the project's key elements centres on the development of rider assistance systems on the basis of Car-to-X communication. Motorcyclists have to contend with other dangers out on the road than motorists. Certain situations, such as fog, slippery roads or heavy rainfall, pose far more of a challenge for motorcyclists. Also other drivers unfortunately often fail to see motorcycles due to their slim outline. So, it can be of great benefit to motorcyclists if they receive advance notification of specific situations. It is often the cars which play a crucial role here, by acting as the warning triggers, as it were: switching on the foglamps, activating the fastest windscreen wiper setting or intervention by the car's DSC system during normal driving can all point to adverse conditions at a particular spot. This information is relayed to the motorcycle to keep its rider fully informed of what's ahead.

The BMW Group assistance systems in the simTD research project.

Various driver and rider assistance systems based on Car-to-X communication are being tested out for BMW Group cars and motorcycles as part of the simTD research project. By getting traffic light systems to transmit information on their phase times, for instance, a driver assistance system can either indicate the ideal speed for catching all the lights on green or warn drivers before they drive through on red (Traffic Light Phase Assistant). By transferring specific data about traffic levels, the state of the road surfaces, as well as other factors, it is possible for a vehicle to issue advance warnings of accidents (obstruction warning), traffic tailbacks (end of tailback warning) or black ice (road weather warning) to other road users in the vicinity. It is furthermore possible to calculate the risk of a collision on the basis of the transmitted vehicle data, meaning that drivers can be alerted to possible crashes at road junctions, for example (Intersection Assistant). Further Car-to-X functions featuring in the simTD research project include an emergency vehicle warning, electronic brake light, as well as the Traffic Sign Assistant.

Traffic management as a vital element.

Besides the development of vehicle-specific applications, the government-backed simTD project also seeks to improve traffic management. To this end, the city of Frankfurt am Main and the German state of Hessen are working on intelligent systems for optimising traffic flows on our roads. The necessary data is provided by the simTD test vehicles and can be used, for example, to cut congestion, lower CO2 emissions and reduce waiting times at traffic lights.

The simTD research project.

The German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development are providing funding for simTD, as this alliance has the ability to take anticipatory driving, traffic control and accident prevention into a new dimension. Establishing a uniform standard is vital for the successful commercialisation of Car-to-X communication. simTD is a joint project between leading German carmakers, car suppliers, telecommunications companies and research institutes, as well as the public sector. The project partners are: Adam Opel AG, AUDI AG, BMW AG, BMW Forschung und Technik GmbH, Daimler AG, Ford Research Centre Aachen, Volkswagen AG, Robert Bosch GmbH, Continental, Deutsche Telekom AG, Fraunhofer Society for the Advancement of Applied Research, German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), Technical University of Berlin, Technical University of Munich, Saarland University of Applied Sciences, University of W?rzburg, Hessen Mobile ? Road & Traffic Management, city of Frankfurt am Main. The project is supported by the state of Hesse, the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) and the Car 2 Car Communication Consortium. The Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development are providing around ?40 million of funding for simTD, with a further ?31 million coming from the project partners.

U.S. pastor Terry Jones denied entry into Canada

TORONTO (AP) ? A spokeswoman for U.S. pastor Terry Jones said Thursday that Canada has denied entry to the preacher, whose congregation held a Quran burning in March 2011 that triggered deadly protests in Afghanistan.

Stephanie Sapp said fellow pastor and her husband Wayne Sapp, along with Jones, were turned back at the Michigan-Ontario border after being detained for several hours. Jones, who leads Florida's tiny Dove World Outreach Center, and Wayne Sapp, were scheduled to attend Freedom Showdown, an inter-faith debate Thursday evening outside the Ontario Legislature.

Stephanie Sapp said Jones was denied entry because of a fine he got in Germany almost 20 years ago for using the title "doctor" there (he had received an honorary doctorate in theology from a Californian university in 1993). Also, both men had been charged with breaching the peace at a planned rally in Detroit last year.

The spokeswoman told The Associated Press that Jones had paid the German fine at that time and won his appeal to the German government for the right to use the title "doctor." She said border officials told Jones the Canadian government requires documentation of the whole case to be brought to a Canadian Consulate in America in order for them to consider allowing Jones into Canada again.

As for the Detroit-related charge, she said that case was overturned in a higher court on appeal.

"We consider this to be a grievous blow to freedom of speech. We hope that this is a lesson for the Canadians and the Americans for us to stand up, unite together, and protect our freedom of speech," said Jones in a statement.

Canadian border officials said it is not their practice to confirm whether someone has been denied entry into Canada.

In 2010, Jones issued a call to burn Qurans on the ninth anniversary of 9/11, alarming the U.S. military, which feared the move would endanger the lives of American troops fighting Islamist extremists in Afghanistan and Iraq. Although Jones called off the burning at the time, thousands of Afghans encouraged by the Taliban set fire to tires in the streets of the Afghan capital, Kabul.

Jones' congregation went ahead with a Quran burning in March 2011, triggering protests across Afghanistan after video of the ceremony was posted on the Internet. In the most violent protest, hundreds of protesters stormed a U.N. compound in Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan, killing seven foreigners, including four Nepalese guards.

Jones was slated to participate in a debate Thursday about "Innocence of Muslims," the anti-Muslim film that has recently sparked violent protests in the Arab world, the most violent of which led to the death of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans in Benghazi last month.

Both pastors were questioned repeatedly by border officials about the film and a protest sign that read "Koran Burning Site" and another saying, "Islam is the New Nazism," were confiscated at the border, said Stephanie Sapp. She said they were asked several times if they were bringing a copy of "Innocence of Muslims" into Canada.

Freedom Showdown organizer Allan Einstoss said the event went ahead as planned, but lamented Jones' absence from the debates. Interference from border officials, he said, has quashed an opportunity for a meaningful dialog on free speech.

"That's the government's choice, that's what they wanted," Einstoss said. "We could have had a nice civil evening, but that's their decision."

Last month, Germany forbade Jones from entering the country for a screening of "Innocence of Muslims."

Threat looms over Bali bombing 10th anniversary

BALI, Indonesia (AP) ? A decade after twin bombs killed scores of tourists partying at two nightclubs on Indonesia's resort island of Bali, survivors and victims' families on Friday braved a fresh terrorism threat to remember those lost to the tragedy.

Security was tight with more than 2,000 police and military, including snipers, deployed to guard the memorial services after reports involving the "certain movement" of terrorists were announced two days earlier, raising the security alert to its highest level.

"The loss is not just giving us grief, it is also giving us the strength to fight terrorism and all other extremist activities," said Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika, the former police chief who led the investigations following the attacks.

The 2002 bombing was Asia's deadliest terror strike, killing 202 people ? including 88 Australians and seven Americans ? and injuring more than 240 others partying at the popular Sari Club and Paddy's Pub in Kuta that Saturday night. The attack was carried out by suicide bombers from the al-Qaida-linked group Jemaah Islamiyah and kick started a wave of violence that would hit an embassy, hotels and restaurants in the world's most-populous Muslim-majority nation.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard attended Friday's event along with John Howard, who was Australian premier at the time of the attacks. Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa along with other dignitaries also paid their respects.

"On September 11, terrorists attacked the great symbols of American prestige. Here in Bali, they attacked our people and, through them, sought to overwhelm our values," Gillard said. "Here on these bustling streets, they inflicted searing pain and grief that will never end. But even as the debris fell, it was obvious the attack on our sense of ourselves ? as Australians, as human beings ? had failed."

Many attending the memorial under sunny skies walked past a row of color photos covering large black boards, some stopping to touch the faces of the victims they knew. Others sat in white chairs with their heads bowed as they listened to the speeches encouraging remembrance and healing. Each victim's name was read and candles were lit in a pool to represent each of the nations that lost citizens from numerous religions.

Memorial services were also held across Australia to mark the anniversary. In the capital, Canberra, dignitaries and family members of those killed gathered at Parliament House to mourn.

Surgeon Fiona Wood, who led a team of Australian doctors that treated victims horribly burned in the attack, spoke of the survivors' bravery.

"A young woman whose injuries were beyond comprehension. The first thing she said when she came out of her coma was, 'I'll never run; will I walk again?'" Wood recalled. "I said, 'You will walk, you will run, you will race.' And in 2008, she beat me in an ironman."

Most of Indonesia's 210 million Muslims practice a moderate style of Islam that condemns violence, and the government has worked to root out extremists. Terrorist attacks aimed at foreigners have been largely replaced in recent years by smaller, less deadly strikes mostly targeting police and anti-terrorism forces.

Data from the National Police show more than 700 militants have been arrested over the past 10 years, including 84 last year. Dozens more have been killed since the Bali bombings. Though the number of domestic terrorist attacks has risen, suicide bombers are more likely to act alone or in smaller groups than they did in years past.

The Bali attacks received massive international attention due to the number of foreigners killed, but 38 Indonesians also died in the blasts.

Tumini, 37, who like many Indonesians uses only one name, was a bartender getting ready to serve her first customer that night at Paddy's Pub. Suddenly, she was rocked by the explosion and felt intense pain wracking her body.

She was thrown outside the bar and knocked unconscious. The only thing she remembers is waking up in the hospital with burns covering her face and body.

Today, the mother of three still struggles to understand why she survived when so many others died. She was forced to find lower-paying work and cannot afford the medical care needed to treat her condition.

"I feel my life is still miserable. I am not 100 percent normal," she said. "I often think and ask why God still allows me to live if I have to endure this pain."

Neither can help you as the buyer negotiate price or run comps for you, but sounds like you are past that stage regardless.

Cambrian fossil pushes back evolution of complex brains

ScienceDaily (Oct. 10, 2012) ? Complex brains evolved much earlier than previously thought, as evidenced by a 520-million-year-old fossilized arthropod with remarkably well-preserved brain structures.

The remarkably well-preserved fossil of an extinct arthropod shows that anatomically complex brains evolved earlier than previously thought and have changed little over the course of evolution. According to University of Arizona neurobiologist Nicholas Strausfeld, who co-authored the study describing the specimen, the fossil is the earliest known to show a brain.

The discovery will be published in the Oct. 11 issue of the journal Nature.

Embedded in mudstones deposited during the Cambrian period 520 million years ago in what today is the Yunnan Province in China, the approximately 3-inch-long fossil, which belongs to the species Fuxianhuia protensa, represents an extinct lineage of arthropods combining an advanced brain anatomy with a primitive body plan.

The fossil provides a "missing link" that sheds light on the evolutionary history of arthropods, the taxonomic group that comprises crustaceans, arachnids and insects.

The researchers call their find "a transformative discovery" that could resolve a long-standing debate about how and when complex brains evolved.

"No one expected such an advanced brain would have evolved so early in the history of multicellular animals," said Strausfeld, a Regents Professor in the UA department of neuroscience.

According to Strausfeld, paleontologists and evolutionary biologists have yet to agree on exactly how arthropods evolved, especially on what the common ancestor looked like that gave rise to insects.

"There has been a very long debate about the origin of insects," Strausfeld said, adding that until now, scientists have favored one of two scenarios.

Some believe that insects evolved from the an ancestor that gave rise to the malacostracans, a group of crustaceans that include crabs and shrimp, while others point to a lineage of less commonly known crustaceans called branchiopods, which include, for example, brine shrimp.

Because the brain anatomy of branchiopods is much simpler than that of malacostracans, they have been regarded as the more likely ancestors of the arthropod lineage that would give rise to insects.

However, the discovery of a complex brain anatomy in an otherwise primitive organism such as Fuxianhuia makes this scenario unlikely. "The shape [of the fossilized brain] matches that of a comparable sized modern malacostracan," the authors write in Nature. They argue the fossil supports the hypothesis that branchiopod brains evolved from a previously complex to a more simple architecture instead of the other way around.

This hypothesis arose from neurocladistics, a field pioneered by Strausfeld that attempts to reconstruct the evolutionary relationships among organisms based on the anatomy of their nervous system. Conventional cladistics, on the other hand, usually look to an organism's overall morphology or molecular data such as DNA sequences.

Strausfeld, who holds appointments in other UA departments including evolutionary biology and entomology, has catalogued about 140 character traits detailing the neural anatomies of almost 40 arthropod groups.

"There have been all sorts of implications why branchiopods shouldn't be the ancestors of insects," he said. "Many of us thought the proof in the pudding would be a fossil that would show a malacostracan-like brain in a creature that lived long before the origin of the branchiopods; and bingo! -- this is what this is."

Strausfeld traveled to the Yunnan Key Laboratory for Palaeobiology at Yunnan University in Kunming, China, to join his collaborator, Xiaoya Ma, a postdoctoral fellow at London's Natural History Museum, in studying the brain anatomies of various fossil specimens. In the institute's collection, they came across the fossil of Fuxianhuia protensa described in the paper.

"I spent a frenetic five hours at the dissecting microscope, the last hours of my visit there, photographing, photographing, photographing," he said. "And I realized that this brain actually comprises three successive neuropils in the optic regions, which is a trait of malacostracans, not branchiopods."

Neuropils are portions of the arthropod brain that serve particular functions, such as collecting and processing input from sensory organs. For example, scent receptors in the antennae are wired to the olfactory neuropils, while the eyes connect to neuropils in the optic lobes.

When Strausfeld traced the fossilized outlines of Fuxianhuia's brain, he realized it had three optic neuropils on each side that once were probably connected by nerve fibers in crosswise pattern as occurs in insects and malacostracans. The brain was also composed of three fused segments, whereas in branchiopods only two segments are fused.

"In branchiopods, there are always only two visual neuropils and they are not linked by crossing fibers," Strausfeld said. "In principle, Fuxianhuia's is a very modern brain in an ancient animal."

The fossil supports the idea that once a basic brain design had evolved, it changed little over time, he explained. Instead, peripheral components such as the eyes, the antennae and other appendages, sensory organs, etc., underwent great diversification and specialized in different tasks but all plugged into the same basic circuitry.

"It is remarkable how constant the ground pattern of the nervous system has remained for probably more than 550 million years," Strausfeld added. "The basic organization of the computational circuitry that deals, say, with smelling, appears to be the same as the one that deals with vision, or mechanical sensation."

Emotional Homecoming for a Tunkhannock Family | WNEP.com ...

Posted on: 5:27 pm, October 10, 2012, by Amanda Kelley, updated on: 05:30pm, October 10, 2012

TUNKHANNOCK ? A family from Wyoming County celebrated an emotional homecoming Wednesday at the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Airport. Lawrence Huffman of Tunkhannock has waited months to hug his daughter.

Eighteen-year-old Mae Huffman stepped off a United Airways plane at the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Airport after completing her National Guard basic training. It?s something her dad was behind 100%.

?When she enlisted she was only 17, so I had to sign for her so I was very supportive of it,? said Lawrence Huffman of Tunkhannock.

Huffman is in the Guard as well, and several other family members have also served. Mae said she couldn?t have imagined doing anything else.

?My dad was in it, that was one of my biggest things, I wanted to follow in his footsteps and also I wanted to go to college and become an accountant,? said Mae Huffman.

Her friends and family surprised her at the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Airport after she traveled hundreds of miles and waited through hours of delays.

?It was awesome. I really wasn`t expecting it,? said Mae.

For her father, this homecoming is bitter-sweet as he prepares to deploy to training and then to Kuwait with the Pennsylvania National Guard.

?I?m excited because I thought that I was going to be leaving before she got home,? said Lawrence.

The Huffman family only gets to spend a few short days together as Lawrence`s deployment flight leaves from the airport on Friday, but they said that time makes all of the difference.

?It kind of sucks because knowing I just get home and my dad`s going,? said Mae.

Through the tears, Mae and Lawrence Huffman said they?re looking forward to the simple things: home cooked meals and time together.

?It?s real important to me, my family is my life really, she means a lot to me,? said Mae.

And the newest Huffman soldier is glad she?ll be home to help the rest of her family while her dad helps defend our freedom.

?I`m happy about that. I`ll definitely stand behind my mom and help her while he`s gone,? said Mae.

They?re one family who is truly army strong.

Pope's ex-butler: My eyesight was hurt in Vatican cell

L'Osservatore Romano via AP

The pope's former butler Paolo Gabriele in the courtroom of the Vatican on Sunday.

By NBC's Claudio Lavanga and wire reports

The pope?s former butler Paolo Gabriele testified Tuesday that he was held in isolation in a tiny cell with the light on 24 hours a day for the first two weeks after he was accused of stealing and leaking private documents to the media.

The case -- dubbed "Vatileaks" -- saw the butler imprisoned in the Vatican police station while investigators seized 82 boxes of evidence from the apartment where he lived with his wife and three children.

The president of the Vatican tribunal opened an inquiry into Gabriele?s treatment during his detention after he told the court that the constant light had caused problems with his sight.

He also said his cell was so small that he was not able to extend his arms.

Responding to the claim in court, a spokesman for the Vatican, Father Federico Lombardi, said, "Vatican cells comply to international standards, but we are taking the accusation seriously and an inquiry has been opened."

Gabriele, 46, told a Vatican court that he was solely responsible for the leaks ? confirming what he told prosecutors during the pre-trial investigation ? but despite this declared himself innocent of charges of aggravated theft, saying ?I only feel guilty of having betrayed the trust the Holy Father placed in me.?

He denied he was helped by an accomplice and that he had received money or presents in exchange for the documents from an Italian journalist.

Cronyism
Gabriele admitted that in 2010 he started collecting the documents, including letters to the pope in which Monsignor Carlo Maria Vigano -- then a senior Vatican functionary -- expressed concern about improper behavior in the Holy See's business dealings.

The Pope's former butler is on trial for stealing private documents and giving them to the media. NBC's Claudio Lavanga reports.

Vigano denounced a web of corruption, cronyism and nepotism in the awarding of contracts for the maintenance of Vatican real estate to outside companies at inflated prices. Vigano was later removed from his post and sent to become the Vatican?s ambassador to Washington, seen by some as a way to push him away from Rome.

Trial of pope's former butler over leaked papers gets under way

Gabriele said that he felt disheartened by what he described as an unbearable situation. Initially, he planned only to gather information and did not intend to leak the documents to the media, he said.

He said that after leaking the documents he realized he would soon face justice and decided to turn himself in.

However Gabriele did not know how to go about this, so he confessed to a priest only known as Father Giovanni, and gave him a copy of the documents.

Vatican says the 'butler did it,' orders trial

He was asked about Vatican property allegedly found at his home.

Asked about a 16th century edition of the Aeneid, he said he just took it for educational reasons for his son and daughter. ?I didn?t know the value of this book,? he said.

And of a $130,000 check found by investigators, he said: ?I never saw that check in my house.? He furtherdenied having had a gold nugget at home.

Pope easy to manipulate?
Gabriele also spoke about dining with the pope.

?I had the unique opportunity to speak to him. That?s where I realized that it?s easy to manipulate somebody with such an enormous decisional power. Sometimes he would ask questions about situations he should have been aware of,? he said.

Conducted under a 19th-century criminal code, the trial began with a setback for the defense on Saturday when judges refused to admit evidence from the Church's own investigation.

Gabriele's lawyer, Cristiana Arru, hoped to explain her client's motives by admitting as evidence an inquiry by a commission of cardinals who questioned Vatican employees about the leaks.

Pope Benedict: 'Sadness in my heart' over butler leak scandal

A summary of the inquiry's results released in August showed Gabriele acted because he saw "evil and corruption everywhere in the Church," and felt the pope was not sufficiently informed.

But chief judge Giuseppe Dalla Torre said the commission of cardinals answered only to the pope and that the inquiry had "no relevance" to Vatican City's penal code.

Only evidence gathered by a prosecutor and the Vatican police will be allowed.

Facing charges of aggravated theft, the man who helped the pope dress and rode in the front seat of the Popemobile could now face up to four years in an Italian prison.

Another man, Vatican computer expert Claudio Sciarpelletti is on trial separately for aiding Gabriele.

The Republican presidential nominee has spent at least eight days over the past month getting ready for the three debates against President Barack Obama. He's holed up for hours on end with briefing books, top aides and his sparring partner, Ohio Republican Sen. Rob Portman, often at the expense of campaigning.

Romney began intense sessions Sept. 4 at an adviser's home in Vermont. Those ran for three days and drew the campaign's entire top echelon to a remote resort in the mountains. A few weeks later, top aides flew to Los Angeles for more practice. Romney has held debate practice at his Boston headquarters, and he spent part of last weekend at the Back Bay Events Center, where the auditorium holds 1,100 people.

The reasons are clear: The stakes are enormous given that Romney trails the president in surveys in key states and national polls favor Obama in a close race, and the debates are one of the Republican's final opportunities to shift the dynamics of the race. Millions of people are likely to watch the debate at the University of Denver, as well as two more slated later this month in New York and Florida. And Romney is looking to use the forums to put Obama on his heels in the homestretch.

As Romney has prepared for the first matchup, one question has loomed over the others among both advisers and observers: Will he provoke Obama or will Obama provoke him?

To varying degrees, each candidate has the same objective: to keep from looking defensive when he feels he's being unfairly or inaccurately criticized, while trying to get under his opponent's skin.

"The challenge that I'll have in the debate is that the president tends to, how shall I say it, to say things that aren't true," Romney told ABC News recently. "I've looked at prior debates. And in that kind of case, it's difficult to say, 'Well, am I going to spend my time correcting things that aren't quite accurate? Or am I going to spend my time talking about the things I want to talk about?'"

To guard against his trouble spot, Romney's sparring partner ? Portman ? has spent hours carefully weaving personal jibes into his answers during mock debate sessions in which longtime Romney adviser Peter Flaherty stood in for moderator Jim Lehrer. During each session, a group of top advisers ? including campaign manager Matt Rhoades, longtime aides Beth Myers and Eric Fehrnstrom and top strategist Stuart Stevens ? have dissected his answers and his body language ? and looked for ways to make him stronger.

Both campaigns have been working to lower expectations.

Romney's team has argued that Obama is a gifted speaker who has participated in general election presidential debates before, while Romney will engage in his first presidential fall matchup. Romney aides overlook the fact that he has a wealth of other debating experience, given that he participated in 19 primary debates during 2011 and 2012 ? more than 30 hours of time onstage with as many as 7 other candidates at a time ? and roughly the same number during the 2008 GOP primary race.

Romney typically emerged from those debates, usually 90 minutes with multiple opponents, as the clear leader. His performance in Jacksonville, Fla., helped seal his primary win there over former House Speaker Newt Gingrich ? though Gingrich had challenged him in an earlier debate in Tampa.

Romney rarely, however, has gone one-on-one against a political opponent, a format that leaves little time for contemplation in between answers to questions.

He did square off against a single rival in 1994 when he ran against Sen. Edward M. Kennedy. Those performances seemed to help the Democrat, who at one point offered this memorable line: "My opponent is multiple choice." It was a reference to Romney shifting his position on various issues. Democrats played the clip at the Democratic National Convention this year.

As part of his preparation, Romney has spent time watching video of Obama debating Democratic primary rival Hillary Rodham Clinton in 2008, including his cool retort to his opponent: "You're likable enough, Hillary." Romney advisers say the exchange shows Obama's occasional tendency to come across as imperious or removed from everyday concerns when he's questioned or criticized.

Romney's danger zone: getting hot when challenged.

That happened during a primary debate in Las Vegas, when Texas Gov. Rick Perry accused him of hiring illegal immigrants.

"Rick," Romney interjected, before Perry began talking over him again, and Romney repeatedly interrupted.

"I'm speaking. I'm speaking. I'm speaking. I'm speaking," Romney said, visibly agitated, at one point reaching over to put his hand on Perry's shoulder and trying to get CNN moderator Anderson Cooper to help. "You get 30 seconds. This is the way ? the way the rules work here is that I get 60 seconds, and then you get 30 seconds to respond, right? Anderson?"

Added Romney: "Would you please ? would you please wait? Are you just going to keep talking? Or are you going to let me finish with my ? what I had to say?"

Perry got to him again in another later debate where he challenged Romney on health care, with Romney playing into stereotypes of being wealthy and out of touch.

"Rick, I'll tell you what, 10,000 bucks?" Romney said. "$10,000 bet?"

It was a mistake, a rarity for a candidate who otherwise turned in solid performances and who is looking to do so again Wednesday.
