Leafs coach Carlyle has sights fixed on Marlies

TORONTO?-?

The NHL lockout was bad news for the surplus deer population on Manitoulin Island.

It enabled Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle to join the annual November hunt for four days, a time of year he?s usually holding a hockey stick at practice instead of a rifle.

?There were a few we got,? Carlyle said Wednesday at Ricoh Coliseum, where he and assistant coach Dave Farrish watched the Toronto Marlies practice. ?I?ve been hunting a few times. That?s the first (deer hunt) I?ve done in a long time. It was very enjoyable .

?The activity was more about the camaraderie and being out with friends and neighbours I had grown up with. (Carlyle has a summer cottage on the island.) It?s nice to be able to go, but nice to be able to come back here, too.?

Carlyle and his assistants were eagerly scrutinizing the Marlies? games and their workouts, but the farm team?s heavy road schedule this month gave the staff some down time. Now, with cautious optimism that there could yet be NHL hockey by December or January, Carlyle is going to be more of a fixture around Ricoh in coming weeks.

?We were all ready to go,? Carlyle lamented of the lockout derailing plans for his first training camp as Leafs coach. ?Now we try to have a presence here. If I?m not here, than Dave Farrish or Scott Gordon and Greg Cronin are going to be. Now that (the team is back) you?ll see a lot more of us. I might go on the road to Rochester for Friday?s game or watch a junior game.?

Farrish joined Carlyle in the stands on Wednesday, while new Leafs goaltending instructor Rick St. Croix was on the ice. The Marlies have three netminders ? Ben Scrivens, the injured Jussi Rynnas, and current back-up Mark Owuya. New skating coach Barb Underhill was also at centre ice in the lower bowl, watching the players while comparing computer video of the individuals? footwork.

Among the potential Leafs Carlyle is keeping tabs on is Scrivens, who could either back up James Reimer or challenge him as starter, if general manager Brian Burke does not land a veteran. Scrivens was the AHL?s best statistical goalie last year and while his numbers haven?t dipped too much, he certainly hasn?t stolen many games thus far.

The Marlies? record is 9-8-0-1 heading into three weekend games.

?Scrivens hasn?t returned to the form he had last year,? Carlyle said. ?But he?s a quality goaltender and you can see it in his work ethic and his approach. We have to continue to work with him to get him back to the way he?s capable of playing.?

Carlyle intends to make the Leafs tougher than predecessor Ron Wilson without sacrificing offence. To that end, he and Burke have to be ecstatic that winger Matt Frattin has come back from shoulder surgery with five goals in his first five games.

?He has worked very hard in his recovery and has a history of being an offensive player,? Carlyle said. ?It?s good to see he?s scoring here, but it?s been short term. The NHL is a different grind. The one thing he has to be up there is as consistent as he has been down here. That?s what our expectations are up top.

?He played that way in the AHL playoffs (10 goals, 13 points in 13 games) before he was hurt. He was a physical force on the ice and you noticed him out there in those key areas on the ice.?

Carlyle has also found few faults with defenceman Jake Gardiner?s game in the minors, pleased that he has been able to keep busy after a strong first year with the Leafs.

?He hasn?t changed anything,? Carlyle said. ?Certainly he?s bigger and stronger. He has fit right in here. He hasn?t sat around just waiting for the NHL to start. I?m sure there?s a lot of players in that mode who can?t wait for the NHL to start. But he?s not fazed by that (delay). He?s played very well here. It?s a good sign.?

Best gifts for children don't require dazzling technology

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Even before the holiday tree is taken down, the child in your life begins to lose interest in the expensive electronic toys that set you back a big chunk of money and hours in long lines. Maybe you made a vow not to repeat this same gift-giving mistake again this year. So, how do you choose toys that have staying power?

Shop with Purpose -- the BEST way In a tight economy, gift giving doesn't have to be about high-tech shopping. Before heading out, consider the age, interests and aptitude of the child and reflect on what brings out a smile and encourages sustained play.

Try applying the BEST approach to gifting and look for toys that:

? Build physical or intellectual skills

? Entertain

? Stimulate the imagination

? Teach team-centered play and socialization

According to Dale Grubb, creator of the BEST approach and Baldwin Wallace University professor of psychology, "Most people have experienced the heartbreak of gift failure. Often, it is because the item is too highly structured. When a toy is overly limited in its function, it fails to sustain a child's interest. To help prevent this scenario, ask yourself, 'what could the child do with this?'

Variety, Creativity and Strategy = Fun "Variety is also an important consideration," Grubb continues. "While purchasing a gift that lies outside a child's established interests poses some risk of 'gift failure,' so does buying yet another set of colored pencils for the budding artist, or yet another baseball for the aspiring shortstop. "

Baldwin Wallace University Physics Professor Dr. Edwin Meyer, who teaches a popular problem-solving class, also encourages gifts that employ creativity and strategy. "Any game or toy where you see a child sitting there trying to figure out the best move is a good one." Meyer also endorses art supplies, "Crayons, paints, modeling clay, among other materials, offer wonderful learning opportunities and foster dexterity."

Participate Don't Isolate According to Grubb, gift-givers shouldn't assume their role is complete once the colorful wrap is discarded. "It's important for a child to be in an environment where creativity and learning are valued. Parents, family members, friends and caregivers need to be participants, too." He says engaging with a child in play tells the child that creativity and learning are important, encourages socialization skills and strengthens bonding.

Grubb cautions adults not to become over-zealous in coordinating activities. "Make sure the child is directing the play," he recommends. "When you 'play house' with a child, the child should be allowed to steer the creative play in any direction. Simply go along for the ride, even if that means spending time squeezed into a box from a long-forgotten toy," he says with a smile.

Or, in the case of an age-old favorite like Play Dough, be sure to buy plenty? enough for you and your budding artist to create masterpieces over and over again.

BEST Gift List

? Build physical and/or intellectual skills: sporting goods, games of skill, puzzles and trivia games

? Entertain: MP3 music players, puzzles, interactive video games

?Stimulate imagination: Art supplies, dolls, action figures, kitchen/workbenches and musical instruments

? Teach socialization and teamwork: Board games, playhouses and recreational games

Ed Meyer -- "the Problem Solving Prof" -- Favorite Games

? Rush Hour -- This single-player game involves freeing a red car from a traffic jam by moving other cars and trucks back and forth. It develops mental stamina and is a great introduction to the field of operations research.

? Guess Who -- An old game with many spin-offs. It develops creativity and problem solving ability. By asking creative yes/no questions yourself, you can spark the child's thinking skills. For example, "Does your person's name have an odd number of letters?"

? Set -- This card game is easy to learn and the whole family can play. It develops pattern recognition.

? SOMA Blocks or SOMA Cubes -- Introduced in 1936, SOMA blocks are seven blocks that can be arranged into a cube or an unending number of other shapes. Your child can spend hours completing a checklist of shapes.

All of these games can be found on the Internet. Several of them have online versions that allow a gift giver to test the game before purchasing.

Changes in nerve cells may contribute to the development of mental illness

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? Reduced production of myelin, a type of protective nerve fiber that is lost in diseases like multiple sclerosis, may also play a role in the development of mental illness, according to researchers at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. The study is published in the journal Nature Neuroscience.

Myelin is an insulating material that wraps around the axon, the threadlike part of a nerve cell through which the cell sends impulses to other nerve cells. New myelin is produced by nerve cells called oligodendrocytes both during development and in adulthood to repair damage in the brain of people with diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS).

A new study led by Patrizia Casaccia, MD, PhD, Professor of Neuroscience, Genetics and Genomics; and Neurology at Mount Sinai, determined that depriving mice of social contact reduced myelin production, demonstrating that the formation of new oligodendrocytes is affected by environmental changes. This research provides further support to earlier evidence of abnormal myelin in a wide range of psychiatric disorders, including autism, anxiety, schizophrenia and depression.

"We knew that a lack of social interaction early in life impacted myelination in young animals but were unsure if these changes would persist in adulthood," said Dr. Casaccia, who is also Chief of the Center of Excellence for Myelin Repair at the Friedman Brain Institute at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. "Social isolation of adult mice causes behavioral and structural changes in neurons, but this is the first study to show that it causes myelin dysfunction as well."

Dr. Casaccia's team isolated adult mice to determine whether new myelin formation was compromised. After eight weeks, they found that the isolated mice showed signs of social withdrawal. Subsequent brain tissue analyses indicated that the socially isolated mice had lower-than-normal levels of myelin-forming oligodendrocytes in the prefrontal cortex, but not in other areas of the brain. The prefrontal cortex controls complex emotional and cognitive behavior.

The researchers also found changes in chromatin, the packing material for DNA. As a result, the DNA from the new oligodendrocytes was unavailable for gene expression.

After observing the reduction in myelin production in socially-isolated mice, Dr. Casaccia's team then re-introduced these mice into a social group. After four weeks, the social withdrawal symptoms and the gene expression changes were reversed.

"Our study demonstrates that oligodendrocytes generate new myelin as a way to respond to environmental stimuli, and that myelin production is significantly reduced in social isolation," said Dr. Casaccia. "Abnormalities occur in people with psychiatric conditions characterized by social withdrawal. Other disorders characterized by myelin loss, such as MS, often are associated with depression. Our research emphasizes the importance of maintaining a socially stimulating environment in these instances."

At Mount Sinai, Dr. Casaccia's laboratory is studying oligodendrocyte formation to identify therapeutic targets for myelin repair. They are screening newly-developed pharmacological compounds in brain cells from rodents and humans for their ability to form new myelin.

Dr. Casaccia is the recipient of the Neuroscience Javits Award by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, a division of the National Institutes of Health, who also funded this research (R37-NS42925-10) along with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

DOES JEB BUSH CAIR TOO MUCH TO BE PRESIDENT? Former Florida Governor's appeasement of Islamists should be cause for concern in 2016

Image

As talk of a Jeb Bush presidential run in 2016 is making news, perhaps some further inspection of his record as Governor is warranted. In 2001, Jeb nominated a conservative pastor named O'Neal Dozier to the Judicial Nominating Commission in Broward County. In 2006, Dozier was forced to resign by Bush's office over comments he made about Islam on a local radio show. The reason for Dozier's appearance on that show involved his objections to the construction of a mosque near his church.

Ben Barrack, conservative talk show host, writer, and author of the new book, Unsung Davids, which features an entire chapter on Dozier's battle with the Republican Party in general and Jeb Bush in particular, says that with the passage of time, Dozier's concerns about who was behind construction of the mosque are more than valid.

?The Islamic Center of South Florida (ICOSF) was the group behind the proposed construction of that mosque,? Barrack says, ?The ICOSF was owned by the North American Islamic Trust (NAIT), which was one of the unindicted co-conspirators in the Holy Land Foundation trial.?

Barrack contends that the forces behind the mosque warranted far more attention from the Florida governor than did the comments of a Florida pastor who was on one of the governor's committees.

?Instead of looking into the very legitimate concerns of his appointee, that appointee was forced out and left to fend for himself,? Barrack said.

Moreover, says Barrack, one year prior to Dozier's ouster, Jeb sent a very kind letter to the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) in response to being invited by the group to attend their annual banquet in Orlando. Though Bush declined the invitation, he wished the group continued success and was quite effusive in his praise.

Human disturbances keep elk on high alert

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? University of Alberta researchers discovered that elk are more frequently and more easily disturbed by humans such as ATV drivers than by their natural predators like bears and wolves.

The U of A researchers, led by biologist Simone Ciuti, spent 12 months in southwestern Alberta. The study involved elk herds made up of females and their offspring. The researchers observed the animals' reactions to different rates of human disturbances in the form of traffic on nearby roads and off-road, all-terrain vehicles.

The elk in the study were found on a variety of land types -- public, private and inside Waterton National Park.

The research data showed that starting with a rate of just one vehicle passing by an elk herd every two hours, the animals became disturbed and more vigilant. In this state the elk consume less food, which can affect their health and possibly their calving success.

The researchers found that the highest level of disturbance happened on public lands where the effect of hunting and ATV use was cumulative.

Contrary to what some people might expect, elk inside Waterton National Park during the busy summer tourist season displayed less disturbance reaction than elk in more remote, unpopulated public land settings where motorized recreational activities were permitted.

Ciuti says this shows that the animals' reactions are not shaped by numbers of people but by the type of human activity they're exposed to.

Observing the elk from long distances so as not to alter their behaviour, the researchers took detailed notes documenting the frequency and amount of time the elk spent scanning the horizon for danger rather than foraging for food.

Ciuti says the U of A gave him an invaluable experience as a field biologist.

"Observing elk, especially in December, can be physically demanding, but you see things you can't even imagine, like a grizzly bear chasing an elk herd, trying to single out a calf," he said. "The U of A is the right place to be if you want to study animal ecology."

This research was supervised by U of A biology professor Mark Boyce. Followup research comparing birth rates in North American ungulates with levels of human disturbance will be conducted by researchers from the Boyce lab at the U of A.

The research was published Nov. 28 in the journal PLOS ONE.

Mursi opponents rally in Cairo's Tahrir Square

CAIRO (Reuters) - Opponents of President Mohamed Mursi rallied in Cairo's Tahrir Square for a fifth day on Tuesday, stepping up calls to scrap a decree they say threatens Egypt with a new era of autocracy.

The protest called by leftist, liberal and socialist groups marks an escalation of the worst crisis since the Muslim Brotherhood politician was elected in June and exposes the deep divide between newly empowered Islamists and their opponents.

The crowd is expected to grow in the late afternoon but hundreds were already in the square after many camped overnight. Police fired tear gas and organizers urged demonstrators not to clash with Interior Ministry security forces.

One person - a Muslim Brotherhood activist - has been killed and hundreds more injured in violence set off by a move that has also triggered a rebellion by judges and battered confidence in an economy struggling to recover from two years of turmoil.

Mursi's opponents have accused him of behaving like a modern-day pharaoh. The United States, a big benefactor to Egypt's military, has voiced its concerns, worried by more turbulence in a country that has a peace treaty with Israel.

The protest will test the extent to which Egypt's non-Islamist opposition can rally support. The Islamists have consistently beaten more secular parties at the ballot box in elections held since Hosni Mubarak was toppled in February, 2011.

"We don't want a dictatorship again. The Mubarak regime was a dictatorship. We had a revolution to have justice and freedom," said Ahmed Husseini, 32, who was speaking early on Tuesday in Tahrir Square.

Activists have been camped out in Tahrir Square, scene of the historic uprising against Mubarak, since Friday, blocking it to traffic and clashing intermittently with riot police in nearby streets.

The decree issued by Mursi on Thursday expanded his powers and protected his decisions from judicial review until the election of a new parliament expected in the first half of 2013.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch said it gives Mursi more power than the military junta from which he assumed power.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted judges had challenged the decree in remarks to Austria's Die Presse, adding: "But I have also noted that Mursi wants to resolve the problem in a dialogue. I will encourage him to continue to do so."

AVOIDING CONFRONTATION

In a bid to ease tensions with judges outraged at the step, Mursi has assured the country's highest judicial authority that elements of the decree giving his decisions immunity would apply only to matters of "sovereign" importance. Though that should limit it to issues such as a declaration of war, experts said there was room for a broader interpretation.

In another step to avoid more confrontation, the Muslim Brotherhood cancelled a mass protest it had called in Cairo for Tuesday in support of a decree that has also won the backing of more hardline Islamist groups.

But there has been no retreat on other elements of the decree, including a stipulation that the Islamist-dominated body writing a new constitution be protected from legal challenge.

Its popular legitimacy undermined by the withdrawal of most of its non-Islamist members, the assembly faces a raft of court cases from plaintiffs who claim it was formed illegally.

The new system of government to be laid out in the constitution is one of the issues at the heart of the crisis.

"The president of the republic must put his delusions to one side and undertake the only step capable of defusing the crisis: cancelling the despotic declaration," liberal commentator and activist Amr Hamzawy wrote in his column in al-Watan newspaper.

"We asked for the cancellation of the decree and that did not happen," said Mona Amer, spokeswoman for the opposition movement Popular Current, part of a coalition of parties that are joining forces to challenge the Mursi decree.

Mursi issued the decree a day after his administration won international praise for brokering an end to eight days of violence between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

The decree was seen as targeting in part a legal establishment still largely unreformed from Mubarak's era, when the Brotherhood was outlawed.

MEETING HALF WAY

Rulings from an array of courts this year have dealt a series of blows to the Brotherhood, leading to the dissolution of the first constitutional assembly and the parliament elected a year ago. The Brotherhood had a major say in both.

The judiciary blocked an attempt by Mursi to reconvene the Brotherhood-led parliament after his election victory. It also stood in the way of his attempt to sack the prosecutor general, a Mubarak hold over, in October.

In his decree, Mursi gave himself the power to sack that prosecutor and appoint a new one. In open defiance of Mursi, some judges are refusing to acknowledge that step.

But in a sign that other judges were willing to meet Mursi half way, the Supreme Judicial Council, the nation's highest judicial body, proposed Mursi limit the scope of decisions that would be immune from judicial review to "sovereign matters", language the presidential spokesman said Mursi backed.

"The president said he had the utmost respect for the judicial authority and its members," spokesman Yasser Ali told reporters in announcing the agreement on Monday.

Mursi's administration has defended his decree as an effort to speed up reforms and complete a democratic transformation. Leftists, liberals, socialists and others say it has exposed the autocratic impulses of a man once jailed by Mubarak.

Before the president's announcement, leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahy said protests would continue until the decree was scrapped and said Tahrir would be a model of an "Egypt that will not accept a new dictator because it brought down the old one".

Mursi has repeatedly stated the decree will only stay in place until a new parliament is elected - something that can only happen once the constitution is written and passed in a popular referendum.

Though both Islamists and their opponents broadly agree that the judiciary needs reform, his rivals oppose Mursi's methods.

Amy Winehouse play canceled in Denmark

EPA

Amy Winehouse.

By Rolling Stone

A play about the life of Amy Winehouse has been scrapped after the late singer's father denied permission to use her music and likeness, according to the New York Times. The Royal Theater in Denmark has canceled the production, which was set to open Jan. 30th, after the reaction from Mitch Winehouse.?

Amy Winehouse's father: "I miss her more than I can say"

Eleven Danish playwrights collaborated on the script for the play, which focused on the singer's troubles with drugs and alcohol and "the enormous pressure a sensationalist public put on a young superstar when her problems began," as the producers suggested. Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning in July 2011 at the age of 27.

Claire & Nick's Traditional English Cottage House Tour | Apartment ...

CN08 copy 2.jpg

Name: Claire & Nick Walton
Location: Hampshire, England
Size: 1,300 square feet
Years lived in: 5 years; Owned

Claire & Nick Walton live in a traditional 17th century thatched cottage with their two young daughters Celeste and Penelope. Set in the village of East Meon in Hampshire, England, their home is filled with characterful details such as rustic beams, traditional leaded lights and solid oak floorboards. The couple have also added a contemporary kitchen extension at the back of the house, creating a light-filled space perfect for busy family life.

CnapThumbs.jpg

Their historic home is complemented by comfortable antique furniture and a warm palette of soft and welcoming paint, papers and textiles. The result is a cosy home with plenty of inviting nooks and relaxed places to linger. Each room is full of unique, quirky details such as low ceilings, sloping walls and thatch-framed views through tiny windows, all of which lend this home its traditional fairytale charm.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Classic country cottage.

Inspiration: Natural, soft colours of the countryside and also the house itself. It's a 17th centrury thatched cottage, so I feel the interior has to complement the fabric of the building or it would look incongruous.

Favorite Element: Our lovely mercury glass mirror above the living room sofa. It came from an antique shop on London's Golborne Road.

Biggest Challenge: We did a lot of building work in the house and lived without any heating or hot water for 2 months in the middle of winter while the builders smashed things up around us! My daughter was 2 and I was pregnant with our second child at the time.

What Friends Say: I have the world's biggest collection of Farrow and Ball sample pots! And that they love the colours of the rooms.

Biggest Embarrassment: The very scruffy oak floorboards in the hall and livingroom. We think they look awful, and yet everyone else seems to really like their aged look!

Proudest DIY: All the shelves, curtain poles etc that I put up on my own, and also the kitchen dresser, which was a horrible orange pine ebay purchase, and was transformed with a paint job.

Biggest Indulgence: Pure black granite worktops in the kitchen - we paid a lot more to get granite that wasn't sparkly - I didn't want it to look like a footballers mansion!

Best Advice: If you have a particular look in mind, be patient and build the room up bit by bit - no room in my house is ever 'finished' and I'm always adding to a room/tweaking it. Also, painting the walls can make a huge difference to the ambience of a room - take your time and choose the colour very carefully.

TEXT-S&P Summary: First Ship Lease Trust

(The following statement was released by the rating agency)

===============================================================================

Summary analysis -- First Ship Lease Trust ------------------------ 28-Nov-2012

CREDIT RATING: B+/Negative/-- Country: Singapore

Primary SIC: Trusts, nec

Credit Rating History:

19-Apr-2012 B+/-- B+/--

23-Nov-2009 BB-/-- BB-/--

===============================================================================

Rationale

The rating on Singapore-based First Ship Lease Trust (FSL) reflects the

company's exposure to the weak credit profiles of its lessees and likely weak

freight rates over the next one to two years due to a downturn in the global

shipping industry. FSL's predictable cash flows from long-term lease contracts

protect the company from the volatility--to the extent its customers meet

their rent obligations. An improvement in FSL's short-term liquidity also

supports the rating.

We assess FSL's business risk profile as "weak." We expect conditions in the

shipping industry to remain difficult in 2013 due to an oversupply of ships,

tepid demand, and high bunker fuel prices. Over the past one to two years,

several FSL vessel charter contracts were terminated because the

counterparties faced financial difficulties. This increased FSL's exposure to

the spot market and decreased its EBITDA margin. In our view, a prolonged

downturn in the shipping industry could further increase the risk that some

more lessees may fail to pay rentals on time and renegotiate or terminate

charter arrangements. In our base case, we expect FSL's EBITDA margin to fall

below 70% in 2012 from 77% in 2011, and stay at those levels for one to two

years.

We assess FSL's financial risk profile as "aggressive." In our base-case

scenario, the company's key financial ratios are likely to remain weak. We

expect FSL's ratios of funds from operations (FFO) to debt and of debt to

EBITDA to be 11%-15% and 5x-6.5x, respectively, in the next one to two years.

The EBITDA interest coverage is likely to be 3x-4x in the same period. Most of

FSL's long-term contracts generate predictable cash flow. The company's

improved short-term liquidity following revisions in two loan covenants and

suspension of cash dividends until June 2013 support its financial risk

profile. However, we believe the downside risk to FSL's financial performance

is still significant given that counterparty risks are likely to remain high

in the next one to two years. Our base case does not incorporate potential

losses from further customer defaults or restructuring.

Liquidity

We assess FSL's liquidity to be "adequate," as defined in our criteria. The

company has no short-term debt maturities. FSL's liquidity profile has

improved following the relaxation in two covenants and the suspension of

dividend distribution until June 2013. We expect the ratio of liquidity

sources to uses to be 1.3x-1.4x in the next 12-18 months. Our liquidity

assessment is based on the following assumptions:

-- FSL's sources of funds include cash and cash equivalents of US$18.2

million as of Sept. 30, 2012, (after excluding US$15 million minimum cash

balance that the company is required to maintain as per its loan covenants)

and estimated FFO of about $50 million.

-- FSL has US$44 million of scheduled debt amortization per year and

scheduled interest payments of about US$24 million.

We assume that FSL will not acquire any new vessels in 2012 and 2013.

Outlook

The negative outlook reflects our view of the high credit risk of FSL's

lessees and the company's exposure to the volatile spot freight market amid a

prolonged downturn in the shipping industry.

We could lower the rating if FSL incurs large losses from defaults by

customers, or we see high likelihood of a covenant breach. In addition, lower

spot market freight rates than we expect could weaken the company's credit

protection measures and exert downward pressure on the rating. EBITDA coverage

of gross interest expenses of less than 2.5x or a ratio of FFO to gross debt

below 10% would indicate such weakening.

We could revise the outlook to stable if we see clear signs of an improvement

in the credit quality of FSL's lessees, along with a sustained improvement in

the company's credit protection measures and liquidity. Given that

counterparty risks are likely to remain significant over the next 12 months,

we believe the possibility of a positive rating action is low.

FILE - In this file photo taken on Nov. 23, 2012, Colorado head coach Jon Embree, right, greets a player as he leaves the field in the fourth quarter of Utah's 42-35 victory of an NCAA football game in Boulder, Colo. (AP Photo/David Zalubowski, file)

(AP) ? A choked-up Jon Embree suggested Monday that the only way he could have turned around the University of Colorado's flailing football program in his two years as head coach was to take shortcuts in the classroom and on the recruiting trail.

"If you just hire the next guy and say you've got two years, keep your fingers crossed," Embree said at his farewell news conference a day after being fired.

Athletic director Mike Bohn, who fired Embree less than two years after he signed him to a five-year deal, said, "Shortcuts are not going to be an answer and we're not going to hire a coach that expects to use shortcuts."

What he does expect is a quick turnaround from a free-fall that saw the Buffaloes thumped by an average score of 48-17 in the Pac-12 during a 1-11 season that was the worst in the program's 123-year history.

In some ways, Embree's quick hook might have had a lot to do with the administration patiently sticking with his predecessor, Dan Hawkins, through five losing seasons, resulting in the proverbial bare cupboard.

Bohn bristled at that notion.

"Jon's results were extremely revealing in a very short period of time, and the prowess of the Pac-12 conference revealed it a lot faster," Bohn said.

Embree, who gets a $1.625 million buyout, suggested he got a raw deal, pointing out he only got 1? recruiting classes to turn around a program that had been down on its luck for several years.

Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano said he appreciated Embree's passion for the program but said it just wasn't working out.

"It's performance and progress. And unfortunately, this year, we didn't see either," he said.

Bohn pointed to a program that was headed in the wrong direction both on and off the field, going 4-21 under Embree, with so many blowouts leading to too many empty seats, though he insisted boosters had nothing to do with this decision.

"Our boosters' resources have never been a factor in my tenure," Bohn said. "Although the erosion of our fan base and the ticket sales certainly doesn't help."

Bohn said he had no preferred candidate in mind but acknowledged the school would have to pay more than Embree's incentive-laden deal that was worth $741,000 annually plus bonuses of up to $200,000 for reaching off-the-field goals and up to $1 million for meeting on-the-field benchmarks.

Bohn said he was still forming a search committee but wanted to make a hire as soon as possible.

Embree, a star tight end for the Buffs in the 1980s, was fired Sunday night, 48 hours after a 42-35 loss to Utah left them without a home win for the first time since 1920.

In a news conference at Folsom Field that lasted more than an hour, Embree began by addressing players who had packed the Varsity Room at the Dal Ward Center and telling them to keep up the good fight without him.

"You had the highest GPA the last three semesters that this school has ever had in the football program. You stayed out of trouble. You guys represented yourselves well," Embree said. "You set a legacy and a standard, and as I told you guys when we're going through tough times, you're not judged by the scoreboard at the end of the day.

"I was. But you won't be."

Even though he'd been stripped of his powers, Embree was still coaching his kids, using the first seven minutes of the news conference to speak directly to them.

Asked if the next coach can win in Boulder, Embree retorted, "How long does he have?"

Embree embraced dozens of his players on his way out of the room and was followed at the microphone by Bohn and DiStefano with university President Bruce Benson listening in on speaker phone while on vacation.

"Jon is a dedicated alum of the university and the Colorado Buffaloes with a passion for his students and the athletic program as a whole," DiStefano said. "And if this decision were based on passion for CU and dedication, there's no doubt that Jon would be coach for life.

"But it also has to be based on progress and results, which we simply did not see enough this year," DiStefano continued. "And so we looked at the performance on the field and did not see the development and the cohesion nor progressive strategy that gave us confidence in the future, and that's why this decision was made."

Embree said six of his coaches offered to resign in order for him to keep his job.

He said he was disappointed because had been given assurances when he was hired that he'd be given the time needed to turn around a downtrodden program. He said that support changed suddenly Saturday night in a phone call with Bohn.

"All I was told (Sunday) was the trajectory of the program wasn't what they wanted. And my response was, 'Well, what was the trajectory of the program before I was hired?'" Embree said.

Defensive end Will Pericak said the players are angry over Embree's dismissal.

"Not a fair chance at all," Pericak said. "Embree needed another year, absolutely."

Most players filed out after Embree left, but kicker Will Oliver stuck around and didn't like what he heard when Bohn spoke about the importance of a third year in turning things around, a chance he didn't afford Embree.

"It seemed like a lot of political jabber," Oliver said. "I don't know what I just listened to for 30 minutes, to be completely honest. He might figure this out. I guess we'll find out soon."

Embree had just eight seniors on this year's team, and in addition to a staff makeover, he was planning to switch to a spread offense and tweak his defense next year.

"We went up against some really good teams that we weren't quite able to match up with," Embree said. "And some of it was just physical differences. We were young. Some of it, we had injuries. But at the end of the day, there was never any quit. They fought to the last play. They did a good job of not looking at the scoreboard."

The administration, though, sure did.

Food and Drink Orgy: Le Club des Grands Estomachs ? Victorian Paris

What follows here is still done to some degree in today?s France. A?few years ago, I watched an eye-popping French TV documentary on the subject. I cannot say for sure whether the athletes of the TV food marathon were actually members of the original Club?de Grands Estomachs, but they certainly maintained the tradition of ritual overeating. Remarkably, none of the participants showed any visible signs of ill-health or obesity.

Recently, I came across the Club of Grand Stomachs in an article written in 1867, which describes one of that year?s menus. The twelve club members met each Saturday in the Parisian restaurant Chez Pascal for an 18-hour session that would be lethal for the majority of today?s health- and diet-conscious individuals.

The pantagruelic?meal, lasting from 6:00 PM to noon, was divided into three acts. Act One began with Potage?? la Cr?cy?(a pur?ed?vegetable soup) preceded by several glasses of bitter wine and followed by several glasses of madeira. Then came a turbot with caper sauce, a beef sirloin, a braised leg of lamb, fattened chickens encased in pastry, maraschino sherbet, creams, pies, and small cakes, all of it washed down by six bottles of Burgundy per person.

Act Two lasted from midnight to 6:00 AM. It began with one or several cups of tea preceding a turtle soup and featured Indian six-chicken curry, salmon with spring onions, deer cutlets with peppers, sole fillets with truffle sauce, artichokes with Java pepper, rum sherbet, Scottish partridge in whiskey, rum puddings, and strongly spiced English pastry. Drinks served with this session consisted of three bottles of Burgundy and three bottles of Bordeaux for each participant.

The final part of the food marathon began at 6:00 AM and ended at noon. They started with an extremely peppered onion soup, followed by a quantity of savory pastries and four bottles of champagne per head. Then they passed to coffee with a pousse-caf??of an entire bottle of cognac, kirsch or rum.

I will restrain myself from any commentary on the ill effects of overeating. One can only marvel at the extraordinary endurance of the human body under such onslaught of food and drink.

Taking Refuge at the Tapas Bar

El Burladero

Just a half a block from home is the site of a restaurant. Now, in the 7+ years we?ve lived on this block this is now the fourth restaurant to occupy the space. The first three were parrillas of one sort or another, the only one I ever reviewed was Evaristo. It was decent and we were sorry to see it go. Then it was a short-lived spot that I?m not sure I ever even got the name, followed by one called Santa Tecla (which I referred to as ?Our Lady of the Keyboard? ? spanish speaking folk will get that). And then, just over two months ago, after being closed and boarded up for almost a year, it suddenly reopened, festooned with Spanish flags, as El Burladero, still at Uriburu 1488, just off the corner of Pe?a. A burladero is that big wooden shield thing off to the side in a bullring where the matador heads when he?s really pissed off the bull and needs to get behind something to take cover ? a refuge, as it were. And perhaps, for me, a refuge from the recent spate of high end places that are all about the frou-frou and molecular touches ? this is just solid, traditional cooking of the highest quality.

In the last week and a half I?ve been there three times, twice solo and once with Henry and a friend. First off, I love that you can sit at the bar and eat, especially when you?re solo. I miss that ? there are so few places here where you can, and that was my favorite way to dine solo in NYC. There are also some communal counter-style tables surrounding some pillars in the bar area, go figure, communal seating in BA?! And, some folk are taking to it like ducks to water. Some aren?t. The first night I was there a couple in their 40s came in and that was the only place for them. They loudly complained about being forced to sit with desconocidos for about ten minutes, at which point two seats opened up at the bar, unfortunately next to me, because they continued the vocalization of their discontent. Get over it. Either go somewhere else or wait in the waiting area for a table to open up ? better yet, next time, make a reservation instead of showing up in the middle of dinner hour.

El Burladero - amuses

So many places here refuse to bring anything to the table until you?ve ordered your meal. Here, before I even got the menu I had a basket of excellent breads, particularly the flatbread, a dish of spiced and herbed olives, a small shot of gazpacho, and a half-glass of hard cider from the tap. Again, that?s all before I got the menu.

El Burladero - calamares en su tinta

The place is a bit pricey, no question ? the idea being that the plates are big enough to share for 2-3 people, and you can try several dishes. The bartender, when I expressed that I?d like to try several things immediately let me know that a large percentage of the menu items, particularly the tapas selection, are available in half portions. Started off with a half portion of calamares en su tinta, or squid in its own ink ? one of the best versions of this dish I can remember ever having. We also tried it again when I was there with Henry and Wayne and it was still excellent, though perhaps that second time the calamari were just very slightly overcooked ? not to the point of being rubbery, but just over the edge past completely tender.

El Burladero - gambas en ajillo

The kitchen apparently missed that the gambas en ajillo, large prawns in a garlic sauce, was supposed to be a half portion. But these were so good I ate them all anyway, and the bartender very nicely made sure that the bill only reflected a half portion. Again, one of the better versions of this dish I?ve had.

El Burladero - bacalao

On my trio night we ordered a half portion of the bacalao fritters, but I forgot to grab a photo before we?d dug in and almost finished them off. The half portion had eight delicious little nuggets with a really nice, mildly spicy sauce.

El Burladero - conejo en salsa de cidra

On my first solo night, having figured on having two half appetizers, I ordered a full plate of my main course, rabbit in cider sauce. The bartender tried to talk me out of it, saying it would be too much, but I so rarely have rabbit I wanted to go for it ? turns out a full portion is a half of a rabbit, so he was right, even if I hadn?t have gotten the full sized second appetizer. But wow was it good ? finished all the rabbit and about half the papas bravas in their aioli and spicy pepper sauces.

El Burladero - cochinillo

Here?s the only mis-step, and it wasn?t the food itself. See, on the night I returned with Henry and Wayne, we wanted to sample through a bunch of different things ? so we?d already shared half portions of the three appetizers above ? and we were moving on to share a couple of main courses in series. So we ordered a portion of the daily special (which turns out to be on the menu all the time, it was just what this particular bartender, a different one from my first visit, decided to push). On his own, the bartender decided to order us two full portions to share among the three of us ? which meant two things ? one, we had enough food that we didn?t end up ordering another main course to share, and two, the cochinillo, or suckling pig, turned out to be a chart topper in the price department ? coming in at 170 pesos per plate ? so he just upped our tab by a pretty whopping amount there. We didn?t know that was the price when it was served and just let the two portions slide ? it wasn?t until we got the bill and the sticker shock of our main course running us 340 pesos ? that we found out. We should have said something, but, we?d already eaten it, and marked it down to being more clear on any future visits (plus, preferring the other bartender). That said, excellent suckling pig, really excellent. The more plain potatoes with just some garlic and parsley were less interesting than the papas bravas that accompany the rabbit ? but, I think you can actually select your choice from the list of accompaniments if you want to.

El Burladero - huevos estrellados con jamon jabugo

On that second visit a couple sitting down the bar from us got this plate of eggs, ham and potatoes and were oohing and aahing over it. I thought it would be a great brunch dish from the looks of it, so yesterday, popped over on my own to sample it for lunch. The huevos estrellados con jam?n de jabugo were, well, hmmm?. They were tasty. But the dish is way too heavy on plain fried potatoes, with just two eggs fried in olive oil and a few slices of this cured ham ? and coming in at 94 pesos for the plate. I realize jabugo is one of Spain?s most expensive cured hams, but that?s just too much, especially for a plate that?s about 90% potato. Cut the amount of potatoes in half, give me three eggs and a few more slices of ham and maybe? but honestly at that price I probably wouldn?t order that plate again. Again, tasty, just not worth it.

So, overall. Well, hell, I?ve been back three times in a week or so ? Highly recommended ? and expect to find me there on many an evening with a plate of one or another tapa and a glass or two of hard cider from the tap (another big plus ? icy cold and delicious).
