AT&T stockholders vote down net neutrality proposal
AT&T stockholders took to the ballot box today at their annual meeting and voted not only to reelect the entire board of directors, but also on a number of measures concerning how the company should conduct business. Chief amongst them was a provision that would have required the carrier to operate its network according to the tenets of net neutrality. Unfortunately for you (unless you're an AT&T exec), the proposal was voted down by a pretty stunning margin. 94.1 percent of shareholders opposed, with only 5.9 casting their voice in favor of true network neutrality. For more info check out the PR after the break.

Where Does Brandy's 'Behind The Music' Rank On All-Time List?
Singer reveals eating disorder, feelings about deadly car crash and secret affair with Boyz II Men singer.
By Gil Kaufman
Brandy on VH1's "Behind the Music"
Photo: VH1
For the past 15 years, VH1's "Behind the Music" has chronicled the ups, downs and back ups of countless musicians' lives and careers. The show has traced the roller-coaster of fame rides by the likes of everyone from Aerosmith to Vanilla Ice, Motley Crue, Milli Vanilla, Madonna, 50 Cent and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The formula is beyond predictable by now: wide-eyed musician(s) with prodigious talent has meteoric rise to fame, tragedy strikes in the form of drug addiction/death of close friend/label rip-off/career tank or any number of other obstacles, but not before said artist manages to rise above and make it back to the spotlight. Except when they don't, as in the case of such tragic figures as Aaliyah, the Notorious B.I.G. or Rick James.
But this week VH1 brought us the story of , the world-beating 1990s star whose resume of drama made for one of the most quintessential episodes in the show's long history. And, in another of the show's impressive traditions, Brandy opened up about some major issues that have never been dealt with in public in quite this way.
Like Missy Elliott revealing her serious health issues last year or Nas providing the most detail to date about his failed marriage to Kelis, Brandy put all her cards on the table, revealing for the first time that she hid her teenage affair with Boyz II Men singer Wanya Morris from her family and fans for years, struggled with anorexia and bulimia as well as talking about her fake marriage to music producer Robert Smith that was concocted to cover up her out-of-wedlock child. The latter, she says, almost destroyed her career for good. She also discussed her reaction to the death of mentor and good friend, Whitney Houston, who died on Brandy's birthday in February, just days after Houston had given Brandy words of encouragement about her revived career.
The capper was her emotional discussion of the December 2006 car accident she caused on a California highway that took the life of a 38-year-old mother of two. "It was just one of those experiences you wish would never happen to anybody," she said. "That was one of the worst times of my life ... someone lost their life and now everyone is saying that I'm to blame." Though she escaped a manslaughter prosecution in the case, the incident clearly had a profound effect on the singer and her reaction provided one of the most emotional moments in the series' history.
"Still to this day people ... they know that that's a button," she said tearfully. "They know that they can call me a murderer, or call me someone that killed someone ... they know that that is a button for me."
This season has already seen a return to the tragic death of Aaliyah in a plane crash, Nas' struggle to deal with the death of his mother and the dissolution of his marriage, T-Pain's heartbreaking battle to break free of his domineering father, Akon's controversial car-boosting past and The Game's battles with his label and former mentor 50 Cent.
But of all the classic tragic stories of rappers and rock bands tested by death, drugs and disorder (Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Metallica, T.I., Motley Crue, Leif Garrett, Def Leppard and DMX), Brandy's stands out as one of the most emotionally wrenching stories of the modern pop era. And, thankfully for her, with a new album on the way and a steady relationship, as well as another hit single with pal Monica, Brandy's story appears to be conforming to the formula just fine.

House passes bill that would call for a single website tracking federal spending
The last time a proposed law captured our attention it was so widely loathed it was never even put to a vote, but today we bring you the kind of no-brainer legislation that seems to have strong support on both sides of the aisle. The US House of Representatives has passed the Digital Accountability and Transparency Act (DATA), a bill that calls for the creation of an independent board to log all federal spending on a single, centralized website. What's more, these expenses need to be recorded with identifiers and markup languages that make them more easily searchable. As Computerworld notes, the vote happens to come on the heels of a recent dust-up involving the US General Services Administration spending $823,000 on a conference in Vegas -- precisely the sort of excess this proposed website would be designed to expose. The next step, of course, is for the bill to win Senate approval, though for now it seems the legislation has garnered strong bi-partisan support: in a rare showing, all of the lawmakers who discussed the DATA Act on the House floor argued in favor of it.

Sephora strives for personalization via multichannel mcommerce ...
Sephora is strengthening its position in the mobile space by not only revamping the company?s mobile site and iPhone application for a better consumer experience, but also deploying more in-store iPad kiosks to drive sales.
Sephora unveiled its new personalized Web site, mobile site and iPhone app yesterday as it continues to prove that it is staying on trend with numerous technology enhancements. The company is also integrating Pinterest into its overall efforts to drive consumer engagement.
?Our goal is to make beauty fun and exciting for our customers,? said Julie Bornstein, senior vice president of Sephora Digital, Pittsburgh. ?We?re constantly looking at new technologies and ways to improve the shopping experience ? it?s all about making shopping easier, better, and more enjoyable.
?Our new online and mobile strategy lets us connect customers with products they want, and helps them to discover new one, too,? she said.
?We were one of the very first retail brands to have a Web presence, and these new digital and social tools are allowing us to make the customer experience even better, whether shopping from one of our thousands of stores or from the couch using an iPhone or iPad.?
Sephora operates more than 300 stores in the United States and Canada.
Branding Brand powers Sephora?s mobile offerings.
Mobile makeover
The Sephora enhancements include a new personalized Web experience, a new mobile site and iPhone app.
Sephora?s new Web site and mobile offerings now offer a targeted product search in the beauty category.
For example, each product on Sephora.com has been tagged and indexed with 25 different characteristics ? from relevant data such as target age group, to specific ingredients, formulations, fragrance and price.
The new functionality lets consumers find the right product quicker.
Additionally, the makeover includes 80,000 additional images, product quick-views, more color views and time-saving checkout.
Sephora is also testing iPad devices in its store locations.
Currently,?20 stores in the U.S. have been outfitted with iPads to give consumers another way to navigate the company?s mass selection of products.
Via the iPad devices, users can also interact with a menu of services offered at the Beauty Studio.
In addition, Sephora is also distributing an iPod Touch to let sales associates help clients find and research products through the Sephora app.
?We?re bridging the online and offline worlds, and the iPads are another tool that lets customers get the best of both,? Ms. Bornstein said. ?The iPad gives our customers another way to search and learn about Sephora?s thousands of products, and keep them engaged with new beauty trends while shopping in-store.
?Customers can use the iPad to review Beauty Studio services, discover the exact product that?s right for them, and can also scan any product in-store to read reviews, or even look up their own personal shopping history to find the same product that they purchased last,? she said.
?We are currently doing a pilot program with the iPad in 20 select stores to determine the best use case for the in-store experience, and will roll this program out broadly later in the year.?
Social efforts
In addition to its mobile efforts, Sephora is also branching out in the social media space.
The company has fully-integrated Pinterest. There are now ?Pin It? buttons on every product page htat let users pin any of the 14,000 products from Sephora?s Web site.
?Mobile is a huge part of our business, from a traffic and sales standpoint,? Ms. Bornstein said. ?More than 70 percent of our mobile traffic comes from iOS devices, and we?ve found that iPad traffic to Sephora has nearly doubled in the past year.
?Our iPad apps let us connect our customers with the products they want and best beauty content; the apps have been downloaded more than two million times. In addition to our 20-store iPad pilot program, we?re outfitting every Sephora store with iPod touches for mobile point-of-sale,? she said.
?Our employees will also use the iPod touch to help customers quickly look up purchase history or access Beauty Insider points. Customers? profiles are automatically updated with their favorite products within our Beauty Insider program, so they can always have a record of what they?ve tried in the past, and of course avoid the lines when paying for any product.?
Users can also check Sephora?s feed on Instagram. The company is giving consumers a behind-the-scenes look at its staff and upcoming trends.
?The idea is to provide a seamless brand experience that bridges the online/offline gap by using mobile devices. Sephora is an innovator in the mobile space, and this effort helps to secure its position as a leader,? said Chris Mason, cofounder/CEO of Branding Brand, New York.
?Sephora provides a clear example of how mobile can enrich shopping experiences across the board,? he said. ?Rather than sitting around worrying about the death of retail, brands should be asking themselves, ?how can I use these devices to bring my in-store experience to the next level??? he said.

It is unfortunate that more advisers are not talking to their clients about the merits of a family trust . When we look at the big picture planning , trust considerations are a must . There are different kinds of trusts and one that we most often suggest is a family trust . Working? in the business market , family businesses need advice how best to structure their affairs . We have extensive experience whichoften makes us first in talking to clients about trusts , freezes and reorganizations . Family trust is a excellent vehicle to : save tax while alive and death , accumulate wealth on tax preferred basis , avoid family conflict and on death have a game plan which leaves nothing left to chance . We live in a wonderful country which allows you to structure your affairs in a manner where tax advantageous structures are encouraged but unfortunately either not presented to people by their advisers?or misunderstood . Yes , we do provide estate planning and do not charge our clients for the service we provide . NCCU Elder Law Project Wins 2012 NCBA Pro Bono Award ...
The North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA) has selected the North Carolina Central University Elder Law Project (ELP) as recipient of its 2012 Law Student Group Pro Bono Service Award. This award is presented annually to an outstanding law student group whose pro bono project benefits low-income people in North Carolina. The 2011 NCBA Pro Bono Award recipient was the Driver?s License Restoration Project, making this the second year in a row that an NCCU Law student Pro Bono project has won the NCBA award.
Currently, 22 students are active in the Project. They are led by four student coordinators, each overseeing one of the Project?s main activities, and a student manager with responsibility for overall coordination, publicity, volunteer recruitment, organizing trainings, and case tracking. The trainings are conducted by NCCU Law alumnus and long-time Legal Aid volunteer attorney, William C. Moore ?94, who also supervises students in several aspects of the Project.
The Elder Law Pro Bono Project began in 2008-09 as a way for NCCU Law students to assist the Durham office of Legal Aid of North Carolina with the backlog of clients needing wills and advance directives (Durable Powers of Attorney, Health Care Powers of Attorney, and Living Wills). Since then, the Project has expanded to include additional activities reaching different populations.
In addition to conducting intake interviews and preparing drafts of wills and advance directives for Legal Aid clients as needed, Elder Law Project students now conduct intake interviews at Legal Aid?s regular monthly wills clinics, held at the Durham Senior Center, and assist with Wills for Habitat, a pro bono project of the Durham County Bar Association. In October 2011, Elder Law Project students partnered with the Wake County Bar Association Young Lawyers Division to put on Project Will Power, a wills clinic for low-income residents of Southeast Raleigh. Elder Law Project students also participated in a wills clinic for clients in Elizabeth City using the law school?s TALIAS telepresence technology.
Congratulations to all Elder Law Project volunteers, and congratulations and thanks to ELP student managers Kathy Blackburn 2012, Bahiya Lawrence 2012, Jim Purnell 2012, Robyn Hicks 2013, Andrea Canegata 2013, and to their supervising volunteer attorney, Bill Moore ?94!

Personal Finance Starts at Home | Shoe String Budgets
Examining one?s personal financial situation can sometimes be a painful process. Budgeting, saving, planning, and insuring against worse case scenarios are just a few of the processes one must design. However, personal finance encompasses more than just financial matters. It involves a lifestyle change that can positively impact one?s day to day monthly expenditures. The most basic need of every person is food. We all must eat to survive. Most of us are not willing to purchase cheap food alternatives just to save a few dollars. The question becomes ? How can we save each month on our allotted food budget and still remain healthy and fit?? The answer might be simpler than one might expect. EAT AT HOME!
The benefits of eating at home as opposed to eating at restaurants regularly can really save quite a bit on a monthly food allotment. Most people think that eating at home is marginally cheaper than eating out, but specific studies show the difference can be dramatic. One website, corriehaffywordpress.com examines this very subject. She breaks down the cost of making a pot of soup at home-Asian-style chicken soup with oyster mushrooms, daikon radish, cabbage, and rice. In breaking down the cost, the average cost per serving was $1.27. A similar soup offered at the local Thai restaurant was $8.87 serving. This is a difference of 86.6% in the cost! The interesting thing about this comparison is that it is not an aberration. Homemade pizza was $2.09 as opposed to Pizza Hut servings costing $6.39 for a difference of 68.3%.
Another study on the internet references the cost of cooking hamburgers on the grill for a family of four and comparing this cost to eating out at Wendy?s. For a home cooked meal of hamburgers, the cost per serving is $1.96 vs $7.46 eating out. This is a cost savings of 74.9%! However, the advantages are not just in financial savings.
Overall, eating at home is healthier than eating out. The serving sizes are much more realistic and cater to the individual person. Eating at home promotes a more fulfilling family lifestyle. Knowing exactly what you are eating gives the consumer more control over their diet. People with allergies and food requirements find it much easier to comply with doctors recommendations at home.
Conclusion- Eating at home will save you big bucks over the course of a month and you will enjoy a healthier, more fulfilling lifestyle. Whose turn is it to do the dishes?

Rick Warren: Contraception Debate About 'Greater Principle' of Religious Freedom
Pastor Rick Warren is interviewed on "This Week."
In our Easter Sunday conversation for "This Week," Pastor Rick Warren told me why he believes the Obama administration is on the wrong side of the recent contraception debate.
TAPPER:?You've written about this, especially on Twitter?a great deal when it comes to the Obama administration's health care ruling when it pertains to contraception. You objected to that initially.?They dialed it back.? How are you with what they called an accommodation??Were you okay with that??Or no?
WARREN:?Well, no, I'm not, because in the first place, there is a redefinition from freedom of religion to phrases - now you hear people talking about freedom of worship. That means its limiting what the church does to only what happens in the one hour on Sunday morning as worship.?In other words, if I have a school, which is part of my commission as a church, education, or if I had a clinic which is part of my - the Bible says Jesus went into every village, preaching, teaching, and healing. He didn't just care about the spirit.?He cared about the mind and the body, and you go into almost any country, the first school and the first hospital were founded by the missionaries, almost every country in the world.?You go to Africa, 25 percent of the health care is done by Catholics.
WARREN: Now people are starting to frame this as women's health issue. I'm 100 percent in favor of women's health, obviously.?But the issue here is not about women's health.?There is a greater principle, and that is do you have a right to decide what your faith practices? I would be just as opposed to someone making a law that says every Jewish deli now has to serve pork.?Well, I would be - I would protest that. Why??There are 100 other delis ?you can get pork at. Why do I have to insist that the Jewish delis also serve pork??There's plenty of places to get contraceptives.
WARREN: Now I don't have a problem with contraceptives. I'm a Protestant. I'm an evangelical. But I do support my Catholic brothers and sisters to believe what they want to believe.?And I would support my Jewish brothers and sisters to believe what they want to believe, and say if you say we don't eat pork, we don't want to serve it in our deli, then you shouldn't have to serve it in your deli, because there's plenty of other places to get pork.
TAPPER:?But as far as you're concerned, does that - you think that should apply beyond houses of worship, but houses of worship are already exempt?
WARREN:? The Constitution says freedom of religion, not just freedom of worship. And churches, synagogues, mosques do far more than worship. In fact, if you took out all of the social services that it provided by Christian churches, and for that matter synagogues and mosques, too, America would go bankrupt in about six months, because the vast amount of social services, the free clinics and the feeding the poor and caring for the sick and educating the next generation is done a lot by these religious organizations.?And they should not have to say, well, I have to put my religion on the shelf to care for people.
TAPPER:?So you believe that this should also apply to - this exemption should apply to religious schools - religious charities?
WARREN:? I do?
TAPPER:?But just to clarify, the accommodation, as the administration calls it, doesn't require the Catholic charities or the Jewish schools or the Protestant -
WARREN:? So here's the dirty little secret about that.? It says we're going to put it onto the insurers -
TAPPER:? Right.? Insurance companies have to -
WARREN:? Most or many religious organizations insure themselves.?We insure ourselves here at Saddleback Church.?I have 350 staff.?We have a self-insurance program, where we do our own insurance.?So we're basically robbing from ourselves to pay for ourselves.
TAPPER:?But weren't you already required to do this under California law?
WARREN:?That's not the issue.?The issue is on a national level, on a national level, to start limiting churches and their organizations, the church and organizations - or any organizations, whether it's Christian or not, in what they believe that that limits what they do with their school or their health care, that is a violation of the First Amendment, in my opinion.

France takes new look at radicalization in prisons
PARIS (AP) ? French authorities contend the gunman in a killing spree in Toulouse took the path to religious radicalization behind bars, with neither teacher nor network.
The investigation will show whether gunman Mohamed Merah, who claimed al-Qaida links, acted alone in the three March attacks that killed seven people, and may help decipher his path to radical Islam.
But in the meantime, his case has been seized upon by those who say the model for Islamist radicalization in prisons may be changing, away from networks of extremists and toward more individualized paths to radicalism.
President Nicolas Sarkozy ordered a study on the evolving threat in prisons after last month's killings, and the justice minister called for greater intelligence gathering in prisons and more Muslim prison chaplains.
Tracking such "lone wolf" radicals presents prison authorities with a new challenge: detecting the Muslim inmate who is not just turning to religion but turning the corner to danger. Some worry that even tighter surveillance may carry the risk of a double-edged sword, stigmatizing a Muslim population already deprived of the means to properly practice their faith behind bars.
In countries from Europe to the Middle East and Southeast Asia, prisons have long been known as incubators for Islamist extremism, where self-proclaimed imams or convicted terrorists prey on vulnerable inmates.
The problem is acute in France, the country with the largest Muslim population in western Europe, estimated at some 5 million, and, it is said, the most Muslim prisoners. France doesn't count inmates by ethnicity or religion, but one expert estimates that about half of French inmates are Muslim, far greater than the proportion in the population at large.
Yet there are only 151 Muslim prison chaplains to tend to the needs of prisoners of the Islamic faith, compared to 700 Roman Catholic chaplains. Islamic leaders say the dearth of chaplains and the failure to provide basics like halal food for imprisoned Muslims heightens the risk that inmates will feel rejected by the system and seek their own ? possibly radical ? path.
This parallels the emergence of "lone wolf" terrorists in the world at large. Experts say the lone wolf phenomenon is in a way a testimony to succesful Western intelligence, which has made it more difficult for networks to form ? outside or inside prisons.
"In a way this is a modernization of terrorism. They don't need role models," said Farhad Khosrokhavar, who has written a book on Muslims in prison and another on Muslim prison radicals, and is currently researching the development of extremisms of all kinds in French prisons.
A terrorist cell in France, dismantled in 2005, was famously born behind French prison walls with members recruited by a convicted terror accomplice, Safe Bourada.
"My personal view is those parameters that identify ... radicalized (prisoners) have to be deeply revised because they are based on networks," Khosrokhavar said. He estimates the Muslim prison population at 40-60 percent of the 66,455 people in detention in France.
Justice Minister Michel Mercier recently announced he wants a full-time security official devoted to intelligence gathering in each large prison and closer working ties between the prison administration and intelligence agencies. He also wants an increase in the number of Muslim chaplains in French prisons.
"A new phenomenon has appeared, the self-radicalization of some prisoners," Mercier said. "Mohamed Merah read the Quran alone and it is his own interpretation that led him to radicalization."
Sarkozy has called self-radicalization "the worst thing for democracies," apparently referring to the difficulty in detecting this solitary transformation without trampling on civil liberties.
Sarkozy ordered authorities to find new ways to tackle the emergence of a new breed of radicals behind bars after police said the 23-year-old Merah killed three paratroopers, a rabbi and three Jewish school children. Merah was killed March 22 by an elite police squad after a 32-hour standoff at his Toulouse apartment.
Merah spent about a year and half in prison for theft and made trips to Afghanistan and Pakistan after being freed.
There are currently 200 inmates in French prisons under surveillance for radical Islamist tendencies ? 75 of them already imprisoned for actions linked to Islamist terrorism, according to Justice Ministry spokesman Bruno Badre.
The seemingly small number of prisoners tagged as potentially simmering threats has doubled since 2008 and there is a fear that unbeknownst to authorities some inmates may be radicalizing in isolation after petty crimes, like Merah.
French authorities have not elaborated on Merah's path to radicalism, nor have they offered proof that he didn't have teachers or guides. His brother was known as an ultraconservative Muslim, and was handed preliminary charges in the investigation as a suspected accomplice.
Alain Bauer, a leading French criminologist, believes that self-radicalization of Muslims in a prison is rare, and that religion is part of a larger process of finding identity for disenfranchised minorities, "for kids in the middle ... born in France but not French."
"You are just in-between, a mid-level delinquent. You know you won't become chief of the gang." In this context, Bauer said, "religion is just a cover for a personal way to become somebody."
Prison intelligence "gets you on a list where you're surveyed" but doesn't explain the road to radicalization. He says that police didn't understand quickly enough that a gangster can also be an Islamist terrorist.
French prison officials only started acting to detect the risk of Islamist radicalization in the past decade, several years after deadly bombings around the country in 1995 blamed on a brutal Algerian insurgency movement.
Officials trained to decipher early signs of radicalization have been assigned to large prisons on a full-time basis, and part-time in smaller facilities, according to the Justice Ministry spokesman. Since 2002, the ministry collects noteworthy prison intelligence and information can be shared with intelligence services.
Experts say standard overt signs of radicalization can include growing a beard, a change in behavior with prison personnel, notably going from a good to a deteriorating relationship, or even hanging out in the exercise yard with the same group of prisoners.
A "manual of good practices" enumerating what to look for and how to cope with extremism was distributed to prison officials in 2008, produced in a joint effort by experts from France, Germany and Austria. Its contents have never been made public.
While prison officials may track suspected budding radicals or transfer problem cases to another facility, the Muslim chaplain at Fleury-Merogis, France's largest prison, has another approach ? to listen to inmates.
"My role is, above all, to listen ... but if I see there is a lack, a deficiency, then I try to set things straight," said Abdelhak Eddouk.
"When an inmate sees me, he doesn't say 'I'm radicalizing.'" But Eddouk says some inmates have tested him "to see if I know my religion well or not."
He stresses that only a tiny minority of prisoners move toward radicalism and makes a distinction between those with an extremist ideology and those in search of meaning to their lives.
For Eddouk, the cure is connection ? via family ties, prison administrators and chaplins like himself.
"Most prisoners are looking for something to hang onto. They just try to keep standing," he said.

PFT: Sapp: Saints should've stood up to Williams
As expected, former Saints defensive back and special teams standout Steve Gleason has issued a statement regarding the decision of filmmaker Sean Pamphilon to release audio that he recorded the night before the Saints lost to the 49ers in the NFC playoffs.
?Sean Pamphilon and I have agreement that all recordings ultimately belong to me and my family,? Gleason writes.? ?Nothing can be released without my explicit approval.? I did not authorize the public release of any recordings.?
Gleason, whose blocked punt during the first game in the Superdome after a hurricane ravaged the city became the turning for the franchise, suffers from ALS, a fatal disease.? Pamphilon has been working with Gleason to document his battle with the illness.? Though some believe the goal is to ?sell? a documentary, Gleason?s explains that his goal was to create ?a video journal library, documenting my thoughts on life to pass on to Rivers,? his young son.
?Since my retirement, and specifically this year, the Saints have opened their doors and included me in countless team functions,? Gleason writes.? ?I included Sean Pamphilon in these activities, because I felt my relationship with the Saints was an integral part of my overall journey.? The Saints trusted me and gave us unlimited access in filing, and I, in turn, trusted Sean Pamphilon.?
At a time when so much focus has been on the things Gregg Williams said, it?s easy to forget that Gleason is now dealing with the fact that, via Pamphilon?s actions, Gleason has made a bad situation worse for the Saints.
?I feel deflated and disappointed,? Gleason writes.? ?I feel frustrated and distracted.? Nevertheless, these feelings will pass, and I will continue steadfast in my mission.?
And so at a time when many are celebrating Pamphilon for doing the right thing (regardless of whether he was motivated by a desire to promote himself and his film projects) and correctly wagging the finger even harder at the Saints, let?s not forget that Pamphilon has betrayed the trust of a dying man.
It?s just another sad twist to one of the most unfortunate stories the NFL has ever seen.
